It's the turn of the century, and a Boston ham actor discovers what it costs to cheat on a descendent of Napoleon Bonaparte. There's humour and cynicism, oppulence and squalour, fantasy and horror, and at the bottom of it all a little magic in all probabillity. A story of transformations and dissemblance, of pride and humiliation! It's a story of 5,780 words, by George!

No sooner had I logged off after reading this than a couple of verses of a Milne parody that appeared in Punch sometime in the 70s(?) began rolling in my head:
The Guard is changing at Buckingham Palace
Christopher Robin went down with Alice
They didn't look like much to me
"They only joined to water-ski,"
said Alice
The Guard is changing at Buckingham Palace
Christopher Robin went down with Alice
We watched a Guard adjusting his hat
"He lives in a Prominent M.P.'s flat,"
said Alice
Possibly one or two more verses but I don't recall them (if any).

It was a parody of the Milne poem - I have the boxed set (both Poohs, WWWVY and NWAS), but I'm too lazy & I'm listening to an Andreas Vollenweider CD to go look right now - Milne's original went "They are changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace...", the word order being a little different in the later "improved version." .
