Character-Sheet: DOG SOLDIER
This is a character sheet or concept artwork for the “Human Alliance: Dog Soliders”.
These creatures are genderless warriors, genetically created by the “Human Alliance” and led by their commander, the shark-hybrid called “Wavebreaker”.
The “Dog Soliders” aren’t very intelligent, but they are fierce warriors, who fight till their last breath. They are loyal and brutal in battle and can be used as “cannon fodder” in some cases, as well.
In addition to their lack of a reproduction system, they can’t get very old – but there are substances and operations, which would allow a very honoured and brave solider to increase his span of life by some years. Though the average age of such a being would be around 10 years.
The “Dog Soliders” are a genetic comibination and mutation of human genes and genes by different dog races. The creator of the “Dog Soldiers” is a scientist called “Lucius van Teerhaven”.

NOTE:
When we had to design these “Dog Soldiers”, my friend and I didn’t really intent to have a real “dog” as basic reference. We didn’t want any race to be recognizable here… so this one here is some kind of combination of a “werewolf” and a “warg”. :3
This combination makes quite a nasty and fierce mix, I think!

But maybe, there's a hole in front of their belly, where the penis used to be... I can't tell. XD
We didn't make up our minds just yet. In fact, I'd love the "cloaka theory"... but that design is more suitable for reptilians. Maybe, these guys simply have a slit in front, undernath that bush of hair... and yes, I know that this would get dirty and smelly, yes, yes. They're not designed to be pretty or to win any beauty contest! XD

I'm glad you appreciate the muscles here. ^^ In fact, I didn't (exclusively) draw such muscles, because I like it personally (which I do, of course)... in fact, these soldiers are designed to be ultra-strong and well-shaped.
Anyway, you are right: they are expendable. Cannon fodder, to be sure.
Thanks for the comment!!!

absolutely. your muscle art has always been fantastic but i think it especially shines here because of the context. they're expendable soldiers and everything about them supports that, from their low intelligence, short lifespans and lack of a reproduction system, to their muscular bodies and even lack of nipples. being a fan of both muscle art and battle scenes, i'm really looking forward to seeing and hearing more about this world!
no wait, that IS a bolter, a bolt pistol looks like this http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m.....rzyo1_1280.jpg
Yepp, you were right. The first photo was indeed a bolter... though a rather old version. At least, the bolter is much larger than the pistol, yepp. ^^
OKAY, to make it perfect now:

RIFTS is an old Roleplaying Game in a post-apocalyptic future with magic, high technology, other dimensions, Lovecraftian style alien intelligences, pretty much everything you could imagine. The Dog Boys were uplifted canine and wolf stock that were used as soldiers to sniff out psychics. They worked in packs with a human commander; there was often a great fondness between them even though most of the rest of the soldiery viewed the Dog Boys as expendable meat stock.

More and more furry characters are emerging from you, I see XD Well, even if these aren´t yours, you draw them though, that´s enough reason for appreciate this heheh. I mean, is really strange to see you drawing them, and even a canine XD
That shading and coloring looks really nice, you even add those furry detailes on the cell shading to put clear the fur´s texture, that´s a nice trick you did there ^ ^
Perhaps I´m wrong, but is this your first canine character? Because I also feel like it is by the way you draw his head. Well, now that I remember, you drawn Furvus XD But well, the head hear looks like Reptile´s skull, especially the one from the right side. Not sure if it was intentional duing that acording with Veyoun´s instructions, but if I cover the muzzle, I can see clearly the canine on this character, but if I cover the back side of the head, and knowing your art, I feel like it´s Reptile becoming a were reptilian wolf XD
The front side looks good for the muzzle´s canine, but the one turning to the right side is different ^ ^º I think that´s the only observation I can see right now.
Neverless, you have more specialty with reptilian characters, so I think it´s natural that things can be seen different. And still, is a nice reference pic that you have there :D Keep making experiences with the canines! Maybe I should ask you to draw me Silver for the next time we made a trade or something like that hahah XD

Wow, thanks for the large comment, budd!
Yeah, this is one of my rather unique furry characters... and it's not even a "real" dog, I know.
Right now, I am doing very clean and detailed line art and shading... even for the more "cartoony" artworks. Yes, this is what I do right now.
You will laugh... this isn't my first canine, BUT I did not want this to look like a real dog.
So, what did I do?
I watched "The Hobbit" and the "Warg" in this movie inspired me. This is actually a real design after the "Warg" beasts!!!!
And yes, their head looks like REPTILE in the profile view.
THIS was good, because it still looks like MY drawings somehow!

Ahh that explain everything, I search on goggle the warg and someone else made a good 3D model headshot of the creature, the front view and the side view, it looks almost just as you draw it too. I didn´t saw The Hobbit, so I did,´t knew about the creature XP But yeah, it does look the same like you made heh.
But nevermind, the whole pic´s design in general looks pretty good ^ ^ so good work on this one XD With you drawing more furry guys are umpredictable, no one can expect something like that from you heheh ;D

I don't know how to say, but that's simply amazing dog warrior artwork. He's as hot as Demian Darkfox! (maybe a little less bulky) I'll download it, too, as another good reference. ^^
When I finish the current lizard pic, I really want do draw more canines since that 'snow fox with a flute' I've drawn before. Because I'm not good to draw them, yet.
I forgot to leave a comment here after you uploaded. Good job on it!

Argh! I cannot leave you hanging.
The best way to describe it is that flat, cel-shaded images do not usually *click* with my mind and eyes. I can look at individual parts of a celshaded image and make sense of the shading but cannot see the forest for the trees. That is the best way to describe it albeit quite roughly.

Pretty much. Furthermore there is some foreshortening on the hatching which adds something for my eye to follow, a transition that perfectly flat images lack. When I look at solid shadows it is almost like it seems to float on top of the image and does not fit within it. Almost like using a marker on top of a photograph, my eyes cannot connect the two together.
Strangely enough there is one celshading artist whose art does not do this to me.
http://squeedgemonster.deviantart.c.....eper-373401105 - In this image there are some, albeit hard, transitions between shadow intensity but it is still there.
http://squeedgemonster.deviantart.c.....eart-358912965 - Whereas this image has a type of shadow transparency (not sure the name of dot printed shadows) that does not smack my eyes around for reasons I am not sure.
On the other hand your Acroth image has somewhat softer shadows parallel to highlights which seems to do the trick for me. I dunno where I am going with this besides my brain is a funky munky.
Enough rambling for now!

Aw, I can understand your examples. These images are very artistic and the shading is quite stylish - but it doesn't serve the purpose to give us an impression of the SHAPE! In fact, it's a very flat shading technique... looking good, but the body appears to be flat. ^^"
"Flat" is the word of day then... :P Pity.
About "Acorth"... yes, I use different shading styles depending on the light, mood or character. This "Acroth" was seen at night, so I didn't want to use hard shadings (which I'd use if he'd stay in full daylight)! :D
You see, the time of the day is also very important... such as the season of the year or the mood in genreal.
I mostly use my "harder" shading style when I'm drawing "sheets" or "very bright illuminated" artworks.
