This is Savarice, a Conline, a Creature of the Vitesta from the Ismenara series. He is a character in the second book, and is a very interesting guy. He can fly incredibly fast for long distances, and needs very little sustenance to keep his energy up, much like Woolraias.

Savarice was first bonded to Priestess Evaline of the Innumerable Counsel, but upon her death was bonded to her daughter, Cahlyssa, who will eventually become Avedis' wife and mother of his daughter, Senrala. Savarice can transfer images to the sorceress that he is bonded to, and is therefore used by Avedis as a spy. Cahlyssa learns to alter small, crow-like creatures called "avats" so that they no longer have a soul, but are living bodies that are directly linked to Savarice's mind. The avats transfer images to Savarice, who then transfers them to Cahlyssa.

Conlines have a layer of extremely fine, hairy down feathers on the top layer of their wings, and so from a distance the creature's wings appear to be smoking.
