You are correct, Gopher Tortoises are a protected species and you will be fined for having them.

I work at a Wildlife Hospital in South Florida. All of my pictures are past & present animals that we have in our care. Some of our animals are permanent residents for various reasons (wings were unable to heal properly to fly, eyes are blind & unable to see therefore catch food on their own, too humanized/too comfortable with human presence for a wild animal and will approach strangers). We do strive to rehabilitate animals for their eventual release if they are able.
