"The thief said one tug meant more rope, and two was pull him up. He didn't say anything about a long, steady pull though."
The lesson to be learnt here is if you jump into a hole on the word of some random oracle (who might be a druid who makes a living selling coughed-up armor and other indigestibles) you deserve to have an "adventure" in the innards of a giant badger. 83

Where do you keep finding these retarded adventurers. XD This reminds me of that story of the party that jumped into an orb of annihilation one by one because they thought it was a dark tunnel. I've never had players this stupid. :p I wouldn't mind though. That'd be hilarious.
The sphere of annihilation one was in the Tomb Of Horrors. That place has a pretty much 100% adventurer kill rate because it is full of cheap traps. I only had one party make it through and that was because the player had read the module. The hall with the Sphere had a bunch of colored portals, and there was simply no way to determine which was the right one.
They host Tomb of Horrors runs as D&D tournaments at conventions. With people who know what they're doing
and create characters specifically to manage threats in that dungeon. You win if you survive. To my knowledge
no one does. The traps in that thing are truly just cheap insta-kills.
