The red against something so pure and white was painful to look at. I had tears welling in my eyes, threatening to cascade free, wishing we could go back in time just a few minutes, a few seconds, and stop this from happening. A quiet sob broke my lips.
“Noah, get in the fucking car. Do you want a black eye?”
“We need to call someone,” I said, the tears audible in my voice.
“We don’t need to call anyone.” Ethan’s sneakers slapped the wet pavement, coming towards me. My muscles tensed with familiar reaction. “I said, get in the fucking car.”
“I heard what you said!” I snapped, and the dying buck twitched, making a horrible coughing noise. An albino, now stained red; Ethan had been the one to do it, the sharp bumper of his jeep had been the thing to tear up its backside. When I looked up at him, his eyes were on fire.
“Get. In. The. Car.”
I cried more, kneeling next to the buck, wishing I had some way to put him out of his misery, ignoring Ethan like I hadn’t done in years. I didn’t want him to die alone, on a cold empty road, lifeblood pouring from so many wounds to drain into the grassy, watery ditch.
“We have to call someone,” I repeated.
“We’re not calling anyone,” he yelled, and the buck started when Ethan hit me, choking up more blood, his front legs flailing. He couldn’t get up, his back legs were shattered, twisted into unnatural angles. I tried to get away but Ethan was bigger, stronger, and had no problem throwing me against the car. His hand latched in my hair, nails digging in like fangs. “Get in.” Wrenching my head, he let go, and went to his own door.
Red circles dropped onto the pale green hood. I pushed myself up, against the throbbing in my head and split lip, and looked at the buck. He was still now, legs stiff and straight in rigor mor’tis, the pump of blood slowed to an ooze, moving as slowly as I did to the passenger side door.
I took the cool handle, and down the road, against the darkness, yellow headlights shone like the sun.
