Ooookay! So, Merida recently got included into the Disney Princesses franchise; With it came a Redesign that I complete DESPISE. Its over-sexualised, out of character, and not age appropriate. >> http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2013.....erida-redesign
(However, not saying the art isn't done well, it is; My problem is that the design does not fit the character whatsoever, and completely disregards key facets of her personality... Not too mention completely what she stands for.)
Its one of those sneaky hate-spiral kinda days where this stuff irritates me; So I tried to channel it into something productive. My take on her Princess induction design.
20-ish minutes in photoshop, sketchy lines and messy flat colours; But this is more to prove a point. Not only is this more in line with her character, its age appropriate. And let me stress that this is very very much incomplete (though not sure if I feel the need to go any farther with it)
Woolen dress with cloth-of-gold, Vest is boiled leather, partially dyed green, a black/gold Bears head to represent her House (I did a little reference searching for vests from Scotland that were legitimate styles of leather armours for Archers.) with yellow lace accents. Note her matching boiled leather bracer which archers wear to protect their dominant arm from the bowstring snapping back. Taking inspiration from the "redisgn" I included the sashy-belt thing but incorporated it as a quiver instead. I thought about attempting the bow, but meh.
Seriously. THIS is how a role model for young girls should be. Historically accurate(artistic liberties aside), age appropriate, I tried my best for age appropriate anatomy while also glancing at screenshots of the film to try and be as accurate as I could too; Instead of the sexualised mid 20's looking redesign (no sparkles either). Screw you Disney.
Oh, Please ignore gratuitous anime-face lol!
