Illustration for chapter 3 of my story, IceStorm (found here on FA)
this one was quicker (I cheated with the crystals, taking different photos and changing the angles and overlaying them over a blue background), I really wanted to paint it by hand at a different angle to show the pawpad and the frostbite more. maybe I will someday.
The idea of this image will mean more to me than it will to you, watchers.
A decade ago (a DECADE ago... time is so cruel) I was having a conversation with a good friend named Tom who went by the nickname of "Ice" that went roughly like this...
Tom: So what did you do today?
Me: Well ealier in the afternoon I played with my dog in the snow. And made a snowman, even though I'm too old for that.
Tom: That's cute.
Me: You should go play in the snow too.
Tom: I went for a walk in in last night. My hand got so frotbitten the palm cracked and bled...
Me: ..... wear mittens next time!
Tom: I'm done playing in the snow
Me: ..... (sigh)
He was always like that, so sweet and sad ... I wanted to hug him and never let go. All I have left is a fictional character I based him on (that we designed together), and memories of our odd little conversations... I know WHY he doesn"t want to ever talk to me again, or anyone else he knew back then, why he made himself untracable to start over, he was completely justified in doing that... but I still hate myself because I was one of the people he had to get away from when I wanted so badly to be one of the people who would FIX things for him (I listened to the wrong people, I shouldn't have let anyone else get involved... rumours started, emotions got too tangled)... I miss you Tom, I still think of you all the time... talk to me again, I've purposely kept the same contact information in case you ever do.... life isn't the same without you... I'll wait and wait and wait for you my friend...
and... I'm sorry...
(I know that was too personal, but I really needed to get that out, watchers...)

it did help me regain a bit of my lost soul, if that makes sense.
I'm always putting little bits of my real feelings about things into my stories, I just don't usually say the real things they were based on... and unless I did point it out I fictionalize them to the point where no one would recognize it.
and yes, Ow. I really do wonder how long he was walking alone in the cold at night for his hand to crack open... that sort of thing doesn't happen instantly (well it does in the story, due to the magic of the ice sword).

I look at this and immediately think New York in style. Perhaps it's because of the overcoat being worn here. Still, it says a lot about STYLE in this, and I think that's rather impressive. Yet while speaking this, that's only the tip of the iceberg due to everything else in the picture.
The sword in itself is just...wow. I don't even think I can fathom how you even came up with the effect for the lightning glow there. That's simply...WOW. IT stands out, it shows another light source for the picture and it's just damn cool. [No pun intention. It truly wasn't.]
I'll say nothing about the overlapping crystals. The background came out just beautifully regardless.
....I suppose that it suits the reason behind why it was drawn. Bravo here for that.
And my condolences for the event.
It takes a lot to not only admit to a mistake in the past, but make an art form for it.
That's not something even I'm capable of doing.

most of the effects on the sword were a "lucky accident".
I started out with a dusty blue for the blade over the line art, and a brown for the hilt. I then added "hard light" filters with a gradient on the sword blade. then a "dodge" layer adding cracks to the blade and to make the handle look shiny yellowy-gold. finished it off with airbrushing some semi-transparent white clouds of frost over the blade.
