Well, here it is, the finished version of Wom-bat dressed as a Dark Marvel.
As I mention earlier, this is just a bit of cosplay for Wom-bat, so none of the Marvel Family are out their power. Besides, he all ready has plenty of his own. For those curious as to why my color choices, I went with purple because I didn't want to be a Black Adam clone and silver because it's not gold like the rest of the Marvels. The red lightning bolt is because his symbol is red and the red trim just looks better on the cape.
Hope you like it
The_Madbadger and I can't wait to see what you come up with for your half ^.^

Oh, I haven't drawn him in years but I'm thinking I should again. I think he might be my first furry character, kind of like MIghty Mouse but as a wombat. Then there is also The Astounding Wom-bat, another wombat character and where I got my name ^.^
Okay, I might just have to do a 2-shot of them.

Always amazing how much the Marvel legacy has spread and expanded over the decades; really had all those nice elements to draw in a reader young and old alike (although probably ticked off the religious extremists considering he got his powers from 5 ancient roman gods and one biblical figure).
And yet at his peak he still sold more comics than Superman ^.^ Pity they can't seem to recapture the magic of the original. I wasn't impressed with the mini-series by Bone and while Trials of Shazam! is almost too much of a divergence from the original...Like the fact that it's not all ages. But in that case I'd like to see it do well because that means the characters will still be in the public eye. And I do like some of the ideas in it.
It may seem odd but if there is anything I hate Marvel for, and given some of the recent BIG continuity changes that's saying a lot, I hate the fact that they own the rights to use the Captain Marvel title on a comic.

DC's Captain Marvel has had problems getting that magic back; I think Spider-man took it after he came on the scene while Billy Batson was in comic-book limbo since both have similar origins in young kids living tragic lives suddenly gifted with great power. Billy probably couldn't connect as well because while he was tragic in origin he quickly went on to get a popular radio show (would have been a TV show if TV had been big at the time) even though he was just a kid and was fairly prosperous. He even had the gorgeous mature daughter of Silvana hot for him in early continuity. Peter Parker on the other hand continued to live the daily troubles of life, dealing with bullies and social ostracizing while trying to remain true to the heroic ideal.
Yes that is a bit on the odd side, especially with the 'One More Day' storyarc for Quesada to destroy over 20 years of Spider-man continuity and marvel history in general just to force his unpopular opinion on everyone. The problem really stems from how Copyright is handled and the idea that you can own words like that. Everyone knows that you have to qualify which you're referring to when you talk about Captain Marvel since two very divergent versions exist, just like you have to with many other characters with similar or identical names. While Marvel might have an icon in Thor for example they can't actually own him to where no one else can publish a Thor comic since he's created based on a public-domain entity for a specific religion so when for example Supreme fought a version of Thor Marvel couldn't say boo about it.
Marvel comics IS however very careful to keep renewing its copyright for Captain Marvel, even if they use some really awful storywork contrary to the original character to do it (I mean really, bring him back as the warden of the Negative Zone prison, someone who fought for freedom and against tyranny? I don't think so.). Not surprising though given the company is named Marvel comics to want to keep the copyright on Captain Marvel.

Captain Marvel had a radio show? I knew Superman did but not Cap. Interesting.
As for the return of Mar-Vell, at least they came up with an original and potentially tragic way of doing it. And the current mini-series gets him out of that prison and out into the world. Now if they decide to cure him and keep him in the present, that'll suck.

Billy Batson had an in-comic radio show, I don't know if they ever had an actual RL radio show for Captain Marvel, sorry for the confusion.
Well the current Captain Mar-Vell must be from an alternate past timeline and not the original, he's still quite dead and even if they kept this one around it still wouldn't be the original. Hmmm, wish they'd show a what-if regarding his having gotten the Quantum Bands instead of the Nega-Bands, since he's the only Protector of the Universe who never had the Quantum Bands (they were in the possession of Marvel Boy at the time I think, then ended up with Quasar).

*nods* Well with how Marvel comics handles time travel and timelines that Mar-vell can't be the Earth-616 version since that version never entered into any alternate (from his perspective) futures and with advance warning would have sought cures for his cancer before it was too late. His problem from the Graphic Novel was his body had become dependent upon the Nega-Bands for survival so they couldn't remove them to treat him after he finally accepted what his Cosmic Awareness was telling him in regards to his cancer. If he'd realized the cancer much earlier he could have removed the bands and undergone treatment and probably survived.
There aren't many beings in the Marvel universe able to overcome the multiversal restrictions against traveling along your own timeline and risking creating paradoxes or spawning alternate timelines (Immortus and his bosses the Time Keepers for example), so for it to be the Earth-616 Mar-Vell he'd have to be mind-wiped somehow going back into the past with the future knowledge he'd be gaining now to prevent continuity problems (although after that awful continuity-destroying One More Day storyarc for Spider-man Marvel seems to be flipping off continuity anymore).

Well, he could be from a parallel timeline/Earth but Marvel usually doesn't play that game. And this could be the same Mar-Vell which could make his story that much more tragic if he does go back with full knowledge and lives his life without changing a thing or telling anyone. And if he was pulled away when I think he was it was before the fight with Nitro and his exposure to the gas that gave him cancer. So if the mini series is handled properly...Which could happen since there are still some good writers at Marvel...It could be a very bittersweet tale of a man going back to war knowing he won't be coming home. Forgive the metaphor, it was the best i could come up with.
I don't think I've seen Marvel do any of those stories yet when it comes to time-travel, but actually Marvel does play those kinds of alternate timeline games (just look at all the timelines cycling through the X-men in the last 10 years). They brought an alternate reality-version of Swordsman back in the Avengers and presented him as the original for months before the truth came out. From what I've heard Mar-Vell was pulled from a period after his exposure, but there's confusion (perhaps deliberately fostured) as to when it exactly happened. Now while helping run a prison for heroes in the Negative Zone isn't in character for Mar-Vell I _could_ see him having the will to return with such knowledge and not act on it (although perhaps as sometimes happens in such stories it's later learned after he goes back that they find a previously unknown time capsule left by the hero to let everyone know he knew and his last words). Perhaps even leave something for his only natural child.
I guess they do, but I haven't seen much outside of Exiles. I thought his exposure happened after he was released from the negative zone and separated from Rick Jones? Then again I didn't read much of the Mar-Vell series, except towards the end, and the graphic novel. As for the mini, it does sound like it won't be 8 issues of him watching over a prisoners in the negative zone. I am skeptical but hopeful that it won't completely suck. Pity most of the current fans probably haven't read the graphic novel, might have been more of a stink about his return.
Only natural child? Which one is that, Genus (SP?), the woman now calling herself Photon appearing in the big Space event? of Hulkling?

Mar-Vell was exposed to the nerve gas during the period he was still swapping places with Rick Jones in the Negative Zone (he even used the effects of the dimensional displacement to defeat Nitro during that encounter). Rick wasn't freed until later using Reed Richards Negative Zone Portal.
I haven't checked out the mini-series but I suppose if I hear enough good words about it if they print a compiled volume at some point I'll pick it up.
Genis-Vell and Phyta-Vell are artificially developed offspring (his lover took genetic material from his corpse and grew them in cloning tanks, which just goes to show how little interest she really had in having a child by him to go using some impersonal tank to do the job instead of doing it naturally). Hulkling is the only known natural offspring of Mar-Vell (and while it might get me flamed I really don't care for him being used as a gay character, I feel it more a ploy doing that to the suddenly introduced child of a long-time character than any kind of natural growth, like with Northstar until they turned him into a stereotype). There might be other offspring of Mar-Vell around (loner hero characters often are shown with a variety of love interests if they exist long enough) but if so haven't been shown yet.
Oh, so you're also an Exiles Fan? I've loved that comic, and I hope the switch to the New Exiles keeps that great writing going on. Quite nice and engaging characters overall, although I think Mimic was somewhat lazy when it came to power selection and could have been more effective if he had taken a better selection of powers instead of being afraid of powers he felt required practice like Teleportation or Fire Generation.

Guess I need to keep up better with my Marvel continuity. Though on the subject of Hulkling, from everything I've heard he is a character who is gay, not a gay character. But that is all determined by whoever writes him I guess.
Yep, I like Exiles but never read it. It was too far into the series before I discovered I liked it. But I look through it every month. I think what I likemost about it is the What If? aspect. Though they handle it much better here than in the What If? specials they've been puting out. I guess I don't really care to see them do things based on recent events. And I like seeing the heroes reinterpreted for different worlds.

Well I tend to think anytime they're going 'I think I need to make a gay character' it's an automatic fail anyway, instead of it just evolving as the character's created. Up until Marvel outed him so blatently in the Alpha Flight series Northstar was handled great, I mean when it came out I actually went through every issue up to that point (yes I actually had every issue from number one-up) and looked for hints and did a 'wow they DID have a foundation that they laid for him without making it something to smack the reader with or something just out of left field'. Considering that they dropped in three gay teens at the same time (Hulking, Freedom's Ring, and Wiccan) it seemed less natural and more contrived and I really dislike when stuff's contrived or more to cater to a stereotype or knuckle under to pressure of some sort instead of evolving as part of the character.
Sounds like you need to get the compiled Exiles volumes then to get your back issue needs filled, although I'm not sure why you feel you have to have the earlier ones to justify buying the later ones as there's enough information carried from issue to issue to keep you from getting lost. Oh I love the What-if? aspect, in particular fixing them so better results happen than would have otherwise. There were so many What-if? stories in the original run that were heartbreakingly miserable (and way too many featuring Spider-man) that I would have loved being able to step in and make things right somehow. Exiles catered perfectly to that desire I had, where you get a group of cross-dimensional heroes doing just that, going to alternate realities to make them right. Seeing the What-ifs? that they go into is nice too; like you say seeing how they reimagine them in various realities is quite interesting, like Captain America an icon for the Skrulls in the reality where Skrulls conquered Earth in the 1800s.
Hmmmm, well the recent one-shot what-if stuff that they've done has generally been bad in general, although I haven't seen the what-if? for the Civil War I'm sure it's a 'look how much worse it would have been if Captain America hadn't gone back on his ideals and instead of surrendering fought on' theme. Probably the same deal for the various Planet Hulk What-ifs too. Some of them I don't even get much from since I didn't even see the original events (I dropped all the X-men titles in the 90s when they got just too convoluted and full of discontinuity to care about the characters anymore) to know why the divergence matters so much.

I guess I don't see Hulkling and Wiccan as in your face because they were introduced as a couple from the start. And with Northsatr I think Byrne always intended Northstar to be gay, however he left the series and eventually another writer took over that plot. Kind of like what he was doing with Maggie Sawyer during his Superman run. Except there i think the higher ups made the change with her character. At this point I'm not sure what she is or even if she's still around.
As for Exiles, I am something of a completist with my comics. So if I suddenly get into a title after it's start I usually don't go back and pick up the old issues but will still keep up with the title in the store. The only recent exception to this was Liberty Meadows, the back issues were still cover price so i bought the first 5-8 issues in one shot.

DC doesn't even know what they've got in mind, for anything, although at least by now they're pretty obviously not trying to pretend that they do like Marvel still is doing with Quesada running things. I just didn't care for the stuff with Hulkling like I didn't care for making Kingpin a black guy for the Daredevil movie, it just doesn't feel right.
Well with the volumes you can get the entire Exiles run from start to finish (particularly since Exiles terminated on issue #100 in order to restart with some new team members with a New Exiles title). It helped me when I missed a few issues when Exiles came out.
What's Liberty Meadows? Afraid I've no idea what that title's about.

Liberty Meadows was a daily comic by Frank Cho that he collected into comic books instead of puting out in bound volumes, problems with his syndication service I believe. If you google Liberty Meadows you should find something. It's very funny and sometimes very moving. Worth checking out if you have a moment.
"A classic cartooning style"? I swear i wasn't fishing for a compliment but thanks, and I've always been flattered that you let me play with Umnus and Onyx (and I probably spelled her name wrong again didn't I ^.^; )
