Hey if you have a decent enough PC and a good enough Connection. go for it. Most of what makes BC's so painful. Is setting up proper security on your Wallet. That way should your pc ever be stolen. No one but you can access the wallet and get the loot. Theres even ways of setting up symbolic links so that you can host the wallet and the Chunks inside a portable storage device. Very technical shit but worth every single moist inch in the end.
The way it works from how i understand. Its operated entirely on its own. the currency grows based on a predicted amount. Its value is determined just like any real currency is by supply and demand.
Put it this way. there is a maximum to what i understand 50 BTC per blockchain. If you mine depending on how much of the block you hashed. You could only possibly make like .05-.1 BTC per mining run. But it takes a remarkably powerful pc or Server to even generate a solid BTC of 1. So there is in fact a real money sink in order for this to function.

No it takes money to make more. IE buy a more powerful PC that can handle hashing the blockchains faster. I've heard of people making Server clusters that are dedicated to mining as a whole. One guy made a cluster so large in the US. His power bills went through the roof. It set off a red flag in his state and was raided for possibly running a Marijuana farm. Which wasn't the case.

heres a list of hardware most commonly used in BTC mining. Should give you a idea where your pc stands.
