I bought a macro lens last year which I have not actually used much (we had awful weather last year and I like to be outside taking photos). Today is a sunny day and insects and other wildlife are out, perfect for my love of natural photography.
This little guy is one of a few pond skaters I found on our pond. I was hoping to photograph the goldfish but got distracted by these instead.
I couldn't use a tripod for this as it was so close to the surface of the water, so instead had to do my best with super shaky hands (thanks meds).
30 minutes of shooting got me a handful of decent shots including this one.
For those interested in what I used for this:
Camera: Canon EOS 600D
Lens: Canon EF-S Ultrasonic 60mm
F-stop: f/4
Exposure Time: 1/100 sec
ISO speed: ISO-200

Oh wow, I've not see anyone use that before... do you need to spike it into the ground or get a base or something? I'm so clueless! I may HAVE to try this now. Thank you for the recommendation. I have a tripod but it's waaaay too big and clumsy for close shots sometimes, specially close to the floor.
This is a very good photo. Professional quality even. I can just imagine pond skaters lining up in a big department store to get their kid's pictures taken. Not overly fond of many bugs but these guys don't tend to terrorize like others. I remember I used to go to the public swimming pool and there'd be the occasional skater on the water and I'd watch him bolt around on the surface. Fascinating little critter.
Wow, thank you! I'm a self-taught sorta photographer. I tend to rely on my artistic side to get shots right. I need to go and learn more about photography on a technical level as I am sure I need to to get things right. I am a bit clueless :s!
Pond skaters always fascinated me as a kid. I love macro photos of insects. Insects fascinate me generally as they're so alien-like. Very strange creatures. Another thing I love is tadpoles. They're so awesome to watch!
Your image of the little pond skater kids made me smile, thank you ! XD

You're quite welcome! And the self-teaching aspect doesn't show. It really does look professionally done. I mean, the little guy posed near what I assume is a floating clover, but I won't swear to it, I'm no botanist. For being clueless you really gave him/her quite the limelight! :3
Some insects are cool, some are interesting, some are scary, and some are gross. I like ladybugs, praying manti...ses? manti? mantee? whatever their plural winds up being, and caterpillars, especially the black and orange/red fluffy ones.
And I'm glad you got a smile. That was a good return on my investment. :3

Thank you, really it's great to get this sort of feedback as I am not very confident about my photos yet :) You're very kind. The floating mystery leaf thing is some pond weed. They look a bit like clovers or cress.
You're right. Some ARE scary. And creepy. Like... May Bugs. I don't know if you know what I mean, but they are also called Cockchafers (UH) XD and they freak me out tons. It's weird cuz I used to pick them up as a child, but they scare the crap outta me now o.o;; and I am not one of those who is scared of many things as I've worked in exotics (reptiles, bugs, amphibians etc). So strange that I am nervous around them now. I think it's the creepy buzzing that gets me and also that they tend to suddenly whack into your head late at night and scare you.
:) !

Pond weeds. Making their way into pictures disguised as other flora since... uhhh... a long time ago.
Sweet Jesus. I looked up what a May Bug is. They look like some sort of chimera creature. Like a mixture of a bat, a moth, Dracula, and a Superman villain. Anything that dive bombs my head/face/eyes is no friend of mine. Little gnats. So adorable. Till they decide your eye fluid is where they want to make their grave. D:

Thank you so much! I refrain for posting too many photos here because whenever I have in the past I am afraid they're not liked much. I may make a photo account... that might work! But having all my art here makes sense here. I've got photos of some London buses I might put up today. Bit random but I think they're so cute.
