Soooo.... I was commissioned by my mom to make a MLP:FIM-themed cake for my little sister's birthday party. Unfortunately, she got the stomach flu the night before, and the party was moved to next week, so I just let my siblings dig into this cake. I'll be making a new one next week.
So as you can see, this is my unfinished attempt at a MLP:FIM cake. I was supposed to add some designs and cutie marks to each layer, but I stopped putting the cake together when I heard my sister puking in the bathroom. -_-
In case you hadn't already picked it up, the order of the layers goes with the opening theme song from bottom to top. The cake is the color of each pony's coat, the piping is the mane color. Each layer is a different flavor.
Big adventure - Rainbow Dash - Standard white cake dyed rainbow colors
Tons of fun - Pinkie Pie - Strawberry cake
A beautiful heart - Rarity - French vanilla cake
Faithful and strong - Applejack - (Pine)apple cake.
The Fluttershy layer was never frosted, and the Twilight Sparkle layer was so small that it was eaten by my mom before I could take it out of the pan. Oh well. XD
The frosting is white buttercream. The recipe is here - http://allrecipes.com/recipe/simple.....ream-frosting/ Probably the best buttercream I've ever tasted.
Fun fact: The colors in the piping around the Rainbow Dash cake was accidental. I meant for the frosting to come out in all the colors of the rainbow, but it came out as red, orange and yellow on the top, and didn't start coming out as green, blue and purple until I started piping the bottom. (Rainbow Dash's bangs are red, orange and yellow and the rest of her hair is green, blue and orange. Pretty awesome accident, no?)
Aaanyways, I'll be making a cake just like this one next week, and it'll have all of the designs on the sides. =D
(Picking categories for this was garbage. lol)

OH! Ready for a nice, simple buttercream to try?
Standard 3-2-1 swiss buttercream.
2 parts sugar, 1pt egg whites. Heat in double-boiler to 110 degrees, just enough untill the sugar melts. In clean kitchenaid/mixer whip to firm peaks.
For the 3parts fat, I like 2pts butter, 1pt shortening, makes the buttercream stiffer and hold shapes better. once at firm/medium peaks, start adding the mixed shortening/butter a golfball sized lump at a time, tossing in, Once completed add flavor of choice, or coloring.
And of course, whisk attachment on kitchenaid <3

its also known as 'swiss' buttercream, the powdered sugar tends to make the icing take on a yellowish hue from the cornstarch x.x
Also, due to heating the sugar/egg mix untill its all liquid, you remove ANY grit of the sugar so its much more smooth, just make sure to flavor it ;)
