I uploaded this a while ago, but no one noticed it... :(
Seriously, I love this photo, but it didn't get a single fave or comment?! I thrive off of your attention, people! No one else anywhere appreciates my photos.
Anyways! This was taken back in January, when it was snowing like crazy out. Seriously, it was insane even for a Michigander like me.

I'd been waiting a long time for a free night to coincide with a snowy one :)
Alas, it was about 5 degrees Fahrenheit out (-15 Celsius). So, without gloves, my hands were quickly reduced to numb uselessness.
Anyways, it's a REALLY simple concept:
Take a photo while it's dark and snowing, and have the flash on.
Seriously, that's it.
You can do [most of] this with a point and shoot. Possibly with a cell phone (I'm not certain about that).
For this, I used my maglite and waved it around while it was in candle mode to create the light design. Those floating globes are snowflakes. Pretty cool, eh?
...
Oh, god, did I just say 'eh?'
I'm becoming Canadian!!

I just used the on-camera flash, as I am kinda (really) poor and can't afford photo equipment at the moment D8
Also, I know absolutely nothing about flash in photos at the moment, so I generally prefer to avoid it.
Oh, and good luck getting another photo of this stuff. I won't have a chance until next winter (this photo was from January), and I always seem to work on blizzard nights. I'll try getting it minus the flash, but it's *very* dark, as I'm fairly well sheltered there from light. If you want a photo minus the flash, you'll just get a dark scene :P
It looks cool either way, and I know what you mean about being poor. It seems some of my other hobbies always such my extra funds dry. Flashes always piss me off too, but it's just something where the results are only as good as the money you put into it.
You've got to at least have a nice bounce unit that can be remoted with a selection of diffusers. Right now I just have to growl and try to work with what I have as well.
