Occasionally I remember my mother telling me that if I was born a girl, my father would've gotten to name me. What did he want to name me?
Diamond Silver Davis.
There's only one industry that employs people named Diamond.
Aside from the laughable nature of my late father's naming skills, I began to think about this some, today. There is an instant recoil when thinking of such industries in the real world. The criminalization of the act has lead to so many unhealthy social problems with it.
But while reading a story by a friend whom
rikmach pointed out to me, I came across the existence of a prostitutes' guild within it. The idea that this was a normal, accepted and regulated type of business summoned all sorts of things to mind. This picture was one of them.

If we lived closer, I'd totally invite you over to watch my Firefly collection. Its an awesome series.
But, in short, the Companion's guild is a guild of extremely high-quality courtesans, they have extensive education and training, and are frequently employed as entertainers and diplomats just as much as they are 'companions'- this is not to say they are unskilled in *that*, naturally. Either way, they're viewed as accepted and respected members of the community in general (though, of course, specific opinions vary), and anyone who tries to exploit them tend to end up on the wrong side of the law or the companion's guild, considering the influence of both, this is not a happy place to be. As someone commented to a character who got blacklisted by the guild in the series, "You'll have to attract women from now on with your winning personality. God help you."
That being said, the number of Companions are limited, and the cost of their services are high, while the central systems highly regulate sex-for-sale, meaning Companions are the only option- however, since most people int eh central systems are well-to-do, this isn't an issue.
Out on the fringe, however, Companions are rare, and few people have the money for one anyhow. Good 'ol fashion whoring is common- unfortunately, without the regulation, women are often exploited, and may not be as healthy as Companions. This actually is a big issue in one episode, when a local despot on the fringe attempts to take over and independent whorehouse- and our characters get caught int he middle.
As said, the series is wacky fun. :)

You know, I've read that in areas where prostitution is legal and sometimes even state-governed, things really are much better for the escorts. Safer, healthier, and it's a more liberating experience for them. They're doing what they choose to with their bodies, earning significant sums of money, and they don't have to feel as ashamed about it.
We outlawed it during world war II if I remember correctly because we didn't want our military brass here in the states going off and letting information slip. We also needed more labor while the male soldiers where over seas shooting away.
If it had continued I imagine the world would be much better off.

Sounds like it would go along the same lines as the thieve guild in the Discworld.
Thievery is going to happen, they know this.. so.. why not regulate and tax it? ^_^
Same principle here. This happens, you can't stop it.. so instead of wasting money trying to stop it, embrace it.. make it a taxable profession. Then you only arrest those people operating wihtout a liscense.

ACtually, thievery is wrong because it brings harm upon another. Thus any Just Law concerning thievery would involve a clause designed to protect the person who is being robbed.
However, prostitution is an entirely different thing. Because it brings no harm upon another, but is indeed a service, it can be properly taxed, and made to work with the core of Just Laws designed to protect all citizens and insure proper businesses have a chance at competition.

In some parts of the world, prostitution is almost exactly like what you have shown here. Clean, safe, regulated, and not frowned upon at all. I think the only real reason it isn't legal -everywhere- is that too many young women and men would take it as an easy way out and a way to cash in on their good looks.
All that aside, I really like the coon gal's suit, and her tie-wedgie!

All I can think of is that Boondocks episode...
"Crystal like the champaign? That sounds like a stripper name."
"And what would you know about strippers?"
"I know they're usually named after liquor. Crystal like the champaign, might you be a stripper?"
Heh, I might join the guild, if it existed... *grins* They'd cover the sort of TG/TF magic needed first, right?

Aaah, if only prostitutes really were legal, clean, and attractive. Oh, and furry. Hah.
But of course, if the first part were to happen, the rest would follow. Except for the last part. We need to restart all that abandoned recombinant DNA research to achieve that. At least I think all those projects were cancelled, weren't they?
And then, I guess ALL prostitutes wouldn't be clean and attractive, just the good ones.. and thus, the expensive ones.. there'd always be the ugly-old-discount-hags department for the people who have both low standards AND low incomes.

Ahhh, I'm glad that comes through. A lot of the vocal protest against this is that it's just reinforcing the male ideal, whereas I can only find that to be the opposite of true. If there's a distinction between professional, casual and romantic, that can only be better for women on the whole. As well, it would be a distinct indication of sex not being especially paid attention to in society, which does a lot for the suppression everyone is exposed to. Lastly, there's just too much in this country that opposes one of the very basic needs of every person- to be touched. Hell, I know a lot of people who would pay to get a few hugs.
Indeed. I love giving out hugs, but on your other thoughts, I picked up pretty quickly that this just kinda felt like it was coming from a world withought sexual repression. I mean, don't take me as a sexfreak or anything along the lines, but this just seemed to be a highly appropriate way to go about it. Also I like how the sex isn't mainly mentioned, its kinda a thing that goes with paying for the whole night.
(forgot to add this to previous post...)
Yeah, the are laws in certain areas that prohibit Prostitution...but I bet those laws could be repealed if some people fought them. Of course, I'm waiting for scientists to start the gene splicing research needed for Anthros to exist...if you know what I mean.

Wow. A bussiness where hookers, sluts, bimbos, and prostitutes are taken from the streets and given professional, high-paying jobs, where instead of just selling themselves out for sex, they acompany paying customers on dates, with the OPTION of sex. Thats amazing o_o If a place like that was built in, i dunno, L.A.? NYC? that would effectively take all the women off the streets, makin the streets less dangerous, reduce the crime, reduce the deaths, and turn prostitution, which is illegal, into a completely legal 1-night stand (or longer) dating sim. the business could be something like a hotel/gentlemans club, and you'd have to pay a membership fee and have a permit to date one. its perfect! also, there nothing in the law that says you can't! O_O
