I believe I need to learn more about him then- I always thought he was just really depressed.

I really don't know his story or his mood, but he looks like being insane in the videogame, but also is sad for loosing Kagabiri (the woman).
I only played the game and it was on japanese so I couldn't understand his background.

In the official site and also he still yells her name when the battle starts.
When he yells her name at the start of the battle does sound like being sad more than insane.
