“Servants, heroes, Noble phanta-whatevers… this all sounds like some bad video game…”
Petie had given up faking sleep after Rose had checked on him and left. The teddiursa was sitting up on his bed, the strange book Jack had left sitting on his lap as he flipped through the pages trying to make some sense of its contents. It wasn’t doing any good, it was all just strange scribbles, bizarre diagrams, pentagrams, and weird circles like the one they’d chained him to. He had a better chance making sense of his baby sister’s finger painting attempts than this.
The ONLY thing he’d managed to figure out so far was that the book was much, much older than all the scribbled text inside it and the only reason he figured that out was cause Momma had a bunch of old, old books she kept for inspiration and she used to read a few of the kid safer ones to him when he was little. Cause of that he generally knew how ink and text acted as it aged and these scribbles were way too fresh to go with this old, worn feeling book.
At this point he had better chance trying to come up with some way to trick Momma into looking at it… she could read a few languages and might recognize it… sighing Petie leaned back and looked up at the mobile over his head. He was really, really hoping this whole thing was just a dream but with this book as proof he couldn’t just deny it… but how the heck could he explain it to anybody either? They’d either think he was making it up or lock him in the loony bin…
“Petie?”
Petie nearly jumped right out of his diaper in surprise at the soft voice next to him. Somehow Anne had snuck into his room and right up to him, the cubchoo looking at him with soft concerned eyes. “O-o-oh! Hi Anne!” Petie squeaked, blushing as he timidly scooted over for her to sit down. Like the rest of his family (Jules included) Anne had been terrified after what happened to him and was still concerned about him despite Petie’s attempts to reassure them (and reassure himself while he was at it).
The ice type gently eased herself down to sit next to Petie… hugging him close as if scared he’d vanish into thin air. “W-what are you looking at?” she asked, turning her gaze to the book as her expression shifted from concerned to curious. Petie panicked for a moment, trying to come up with some kind of excuse, before just stuttering out “A-and old book I f-found… j-just trying to figure out what it is.” He stuttered, opting to avoid his usual failure at lying and just tell a half truth.
Anne nodded softly, tilting her head a little as she asked “M-may I look at it?” which left Petie at a loss of how to say no since Jack had kinda made a big deal about this book. Not sure what else to do the teddiursa carefully moved the thick bound book into Anne’s lap and squeaked “B-be careful… i-it’s old…” as the cubchoo cautiously flipped through the pages, finally stopping on the one with the weird circle thing on it and brushinging the image with her usually large paw lightly by accident… which was enough to make the lines start to glow as both bears squeaked in fear and let the book fall to the floor, still open to the page with the circle.
Before Petie could dive forward and try to shut the book a full sized version of the circle materialized on the floor of his room prompting Anne to let out a squeal of fear so high Petie could barely hear it (though Jules and the neighborhood canines probably fell down in pain at the noise) and hugged Petie to her in fear. The circle grew brighter as a small, but still taller than them, figure began to materialize in the middle of it. As it took on a more solid shape and form a young, cheerful and energetic voice rang out through the room (reminding Petie a little of Jules in his more mellow moments) to… start babbling like an excited schoolgirl.
“Hi there! I was wondering if I’d get to be in this war or not! Thanks for summoning me! I mean, I don’t know if you did it intentionally or not but still, it’s nice to be called even if it was totally by accident! Judging by your scared looks it was, so let me welcome you to the Holy Grail War! This is going to be fun! Well as fun as war can be anyway… so what’s your name?”
Both bears stared in shock as a Kirlia with shockingly pink hair emerged from the light. She was a beautiful girl somewhere in her early teens. Her pink hair was shoulder length and roughly cut at the end for a cute appearance with a waist length pink braid dangling over her shoulder. She was clad in a white cape with a fur trimmed collar over a black puffy sleeved shirt and a black mini skirt that barely reached her calves with sparse silver armor over them. Thigh high black leggings held up by what looked like a garter belt went on under white knee high boots as a sword dangled from the figures waist along with an incredibly small black curved animal horn. Two black hairbows on either side of her head completed the look as she looked at them with eyes as pink as her hair.
Finally she paused to take a breath after babbling for at least three minutes straight and smiled kindly to them, giving a steeped bow before bouncing back into regular posture as she cheerfully chirped.
“Anyway you can call me Rider! It’s nice to meet you Master!”
Anne just stared at the figure dumbfounded while Petie groaned and put his head in his paws as he let out an exasperated sounding
“Not ANOTHER one!!!”
******************
Jack finally stopped running, not because he was tired mind you but because the boost from his Boots of Agility had worn off and they needed to recharge, as he leaned on the alleyway wall and groaned. Luckily his pants were like the prana armor other Servants used so he could just go into spiritual form and come back and the evidence of his… “little accident” was gone… but that didn’t make it any less shameful. He couldn’t BELIEVE he’d gone and soaked his pants like that… the guy was trying to kill him yeah but still he was Jack the Giant Killer! Something like that’d ruin his rep…
And more than that who the heck was that guy and how did he resist “Jack’s Trick”!? That Noble Phantasm ignored prana defense, armor, and prana armor! Well okay he might be exaggerating its power a bit but the only way HE knew to block it was to be too tough for the dagger to cut and there was NO way the guy naturally had skin tough enough to make the dagger just bounce off like that!
Jack groaned and fiddled with his Cap of Knowledge, it granted him protection from mental influence… but he wished it could answer any question he had like in the stories. Then he’d be able to figure out what had happened. Hell the other heroic spirits probably would have recognized the guy or figured it out… Jack just didn’t know since he was an Irregular Servant and a fake… blinking he touched his cheeks to find warm tears and grimaced, wiping them away in disgust. This had to be the fault of his worthless little master, it had to be…
Jack couldn’t make himself fully believe that… but it did make him feel a little better.
“You can just keep shooting arrows at me, I’ll just keep knocking them out of the air.”
“Do not insult my archer skills Lancer, these were taught to me by my beloved teacher and are a reflection of his skills.”
“Not insulting you Archer! Not at all! In fact it’s kinda refreshing to finally meet an Archer who uses actual arrows… not to mention one who’s willing to give me a good fight and doesn’t annoy me!”
“Ah, I see then. You will have to share that story with me over those drinks you promised. In return I shall share a few stories of my own. Have you perhaps heard of my inspiration the famed warrior Guan Yu?”
“Nope! Can’t say I have!”
“Then I shall enjoy sharing the story.”
Two voice, distinctly male, one younger and friendly sounding in a teasing way while the other was slightly deeper and more respectful both chorused by the sound of light conflict… Jack blinked for a moment and poked his large ears. Apparently being a teddiursa wasn’t all bad, he didn’t think his hearing would be that good. He also didn’t think he’d find two more servants… heck finding the first one was a surprise and now he’d found… wait… they’d mentioned Archer and Lancer in their conversation… but the prima donna who nearly impaled him had been a Lancer… and there was only supposed to be one of each of the seven classes…
What in the name of Tom Thumb was going on here!?
Activating his invisibility cloak again Jack, much more cautiously this time, crept closer to the sounds and voices. As he neared it he could better make out what the noises were… the rapid-fire twang of a bow string, whistling of arrows, and the sound of wood snapping and splintering. All this along with the conversation from earlier painted a simple picture in his head of the Archer shooting and the Lancer cutting the arrows clean out of the air. Suddenly the bow went silent and the respectful voice echoed out again with a deeper tone that was definitely the activation of a Noble Phantasm.
“Eighteen Arms of Wushu: Ji!”
“Interesting, if it’s a duel of spears you want I’m game! Lets have some fun!”
Jack paused as the noise had changed to the clashing of metal on metal from two weapons colliding. Now he HAD to spy on them, just to find out what the heck was going on. Sneaking from cover to cover Jack finally peeked his head around the corner, praying the invisibility would keep it from being torn off, to find… an oddly normal scene considering how the Holy Grail War worked.
On one side was a tall, lanky looking mightyena with a thin runner’s build… and he was wearing what looked like a full, form-hugging body suit in a deep blue the same color as his short cropped hair. The suit had large silver colored shoulder guards or epaulettes of some kind along with silver lines running all over it in a pattern all the way down to the silver toed boots. In his hands he clutched a long, intricately carved spear that looked like it was forged from a single chunk of some blood red material that gleamed menacingly in the light. He had a big grin on his face as his tail whip through the air in excitement.
On the other side was a staraptor morph that stood a little shorter than the mightyena and was more on the portly side making him look almost fat when compared to his svelte opponent. The colors of the feathers on the guys face gave him the impression of having a short and neatly kept beard and mustache but past the steely resolve in his eyes the rest of his head was hidden by a wrought dull grey colored Chinese styled helmet with a red crest. He was dressed in matching colored Chinese style armor with torso, shoulder, and skirt pieces in the same color over what looked to be a white shirt and pants. Over this he wore a red cape and a red wrap around his middle along with arm and shin guards. His cape was pushed aside to reveal a quiver full of arrows but his bow was slung back there with them. Instead of that he held a long spear in his hands with what looked like a crescent shaped blade attached to the bottom of the spearhead.
The warriors were fighting… in what looked to Jack like a rather relaxed pace. In fact it looked more like a friendly sparring match than a fight to the death as he saw them swinging their respective pole weapons at each other, the mightyena leaping and dodging around with his slashing and stabbing attacks while the staraptor stood there and parried the much faster blows, launching his own attacks when the opportunity presented itself. Due to the length of their respective weapons neither warrior was getting close to the other and between them was a volley of sparks and clashing metal. Yet somehow they continued to trade banter back and forth.
“That’s an interesting spear you’ve got there Archer! You know how to use it too I see!”
“It is a Halberd and you flatter me my friend. To have my form praised by a Lancer is great indeed. More for me to be thankful for the lessons of my teacher.”
“Oh? Well He must really be something special! I would have liked to meet him!”
“Perhaps you will, he was a legend far before I humbly join the ranks and he might well have been summoned.”
The fast paced fighting continued for a moment till both warriors jumped back from each other… obviously not out of breath or visibly tired. If Jack had to guess it looked like they were more trying to size each other up again… till there was a splash and both of them turned their heads to look in Jack’s direction. Jack snapped his gaze down to his feet and found he’d been focusing so much on their fight he’d ended up stepping right in a deep puddle. He’d have smacked himself for being an idiot right then and there but the mightyena cut him off as he smirked and twirled his spear to rest against his shoulder before saying
“You might as well come out, we know you’re there.”
Jack spoke a few words he was glad his babyish Master wasn’t around to hear as he let his invisibility drop… and both the warriors eyebrows raised in surprise. “This is… a surprise.” The staraptor said as his halberd vanished while the mightyena just gave a good natured laugh and flashed a teasing grin “You look kinda out of your league here kiddo, or should I call you Jack?” he asked making Jack’s cheeks go red as he was about to demand how the dog knew that. Without missing a beat the blue clad warrior spun his spear and used the tip to point at Jack’s belt “Walking around with a name tag like that in these fights isn’t too bright… but it’s kinda cute on a little kid. So tell me, what class are you?” he asked in an even more teasing tone, making Jack’s cheeks flush redder and he ground his teeth in anger.
“I don’t CARE who knows about my identity, and the names Assassin to you.” He growled, fists clenching slowly. Usually he wouldn’t mind bragging about himself and he’d have whipped out Jack’s trick on them… but he could only target one of them with it and they were way too strong to try to outmaneuver. His best option was to fall back and set a trap as he went in case they pursued him… but darn it all this blue clad bastard was REALLY pushing his buttons! HE was darn close to boiling over… as the mightyena opened his mouth once more
“You’re the cutest little Assassin I ever saw. Guess this war’s taking all types. Anyway feel free to watch if you want, wouldn’t feel right beating up a baby. You might want to run on home afterwards though little Assassin, there’s dangerous people in this war.”
Jack wasn’t sure if it was cause he’d had a bad night, cause of the teasing tone the mightyena used, or cause of the “Baby” comment but that tore it. The teddiursa whipped his hand up and called the miniscule amount of Prana needed to call out one of his other Noble Phantasms. He could clearly picture it as an old fashioned, sturdy pickaxe… and he could barely hide his grimace as the one that materialized in his hands was resized for his current form to the point of being a toy. Ignoring that as best he could Jack leapt forward and plunged the tip of the pickaxe into the concrete in front of Lance as he shouted the Phantasms name.
“Cormoran’s Folly!!”
Crack!
There was the sound of concrete breaking on impact as the pickaxe struck home… and then silence as both the Servants stared at Jack in confusion as nothing seemed to happen. Lancer opened his mouth, probably about to ask what that did, as the ground suddenly gave out from under him and he plummeted into the 10 foot wide and 22 foot deep pit trap Jack’s Noble Phantasm had created. “Hah!” the teddiursa laughed as he grinned and shouldered the pickaxe in what he was sure was a badass pose “How do you like that!? These pits are made to stop giants! Hope you had a nice landing down there!”
Jack might have gone on trash talking as he gazed down into the darkness of the pit, but he was cut off by a blue blur and a rush of wind as he heard something land behind him. He stood there for a moment gazing down with his mouth hanging open before he timidly turned and dared to look behind him. There was the mightyena, an amused grin spread across his face, crouched down so he was eye level with jack with his spear held over his shoulder’s in an almost casual fashion. As Jack went wide eyed in horror the hound chuckled and spoke in a friendly tone.
“Neat trick you’ve got there, but I think you’re taking me too lightly don’t ya think?”
Letting his dignity slide away, likely down the tubes where he’d never retrieve it, Jack squealed in fright and tried to jump back… only for the pit he’d dug to remind him of its presence as he teetered on the edge flailing his arms and trying to maintain his balance. He couldn’t believe it, he honestly couldn’t believe it. He was about to fall into his own pit trap! He was FALLING into his own pit trap! How did this happen!? He squealed again as he lost his footing and managed to turn to face the blackness of the magically made pit as he started to fall…
“Shuang Gou.”
Jack’s fall was suddenly jerked to a stop as he experienced an unfamiliar and surprising pain. It took him a moment before the modern knowledge and the memories he’d gotten from Petie managed to place it. He squirmed as he dangled in the wedgie and was lifted up by the back of his shorts only to be safely deposited on the side of the pit. Laying there Jack bit his lip in frustration, his cheeks red with shame, as he slowly pushed himself back up to his hands and knees.
A flash of silver got his attention as he glanced towards it, finding the Archer was now holding what looked roughly like swords in his wing hands. They were straight bits of metal with a saber like grip, the hand guard shaped like a crescent and a hook shape at the end of the blade. There was one in each of his hands and he had likely used the hook tip of one of them to snag Jack’s pants and stopped his fall. Lancer meanwhile was having a good natured laugh at this whole thing as he grinned to Archer.
“Bow, halberd, now swords? You sure you’re an Archer?”
“Quite sure, but my teacher was kind enough to instruct me in other weapons as well.”
“Okay then, long as you don’t start using your bow to shoot that stuff its fine with me.”
“… who in the world would try something that insane sounding?”
“When we get that drink I’ll tell you about this guy I know.”
Jack meanwhile took the opportunity to slowly slink away as he activated his Cloak of Invisibility. Thoroughly humiliated, a little shaky in the legs, and all thoughts of managing to take either of these two down his thoughts turned to retreat. He’d NEVER had one of his own traps turned back on him like that… it was a painfully humbling experience. Almost as painful as the thought of slinking back to his toddler teddy bear of a Master like this… luckily he was a good liar and he could use what he’d learned about the other Servants weapons to claim he’d been “Gathering Intelligence” on them…
Instead of getting his ass kicked and soaking his shorts…
Man this was a bad day…
**************
Neither Servant noticed Jack slink off till after the fact, a thing that made Lancer laugh lightly “Well at least he can be sneaky when he’s running away, wonder if we’ll see him again?” he mused aloud as Archer merely shrugged as the hook swords he was holding vanished “I do not know, but we are all in the same war so it is likely. There are a few heroes I read about in my time that I hope to meet in this war myself.” The staraptor mused, as impassive and respectful as always “Now, shall we get that drink? After that little distraction I’ve lost a bit of interest in continuing our spar.” He said which made the mightyena pout.
“Aawwww, and I was just having fun too! Okay then, we aren’t supposed to be fighting yet anyway so lets get that drink!”
“Wonderful, I’ve been hoping to sample some good alcohol again now that I’m no longer under my emperors orders… also do you know WHEN exactly the actual conflict in this war will star?”
“Heck if I know, but I’m getting antsy waiting! Been so long since I managed to have a good scrap in one of these wars!”
“So you’ve been summoned in one before?”
“Yeah, like I said I’ll tell you about it over the drinks.”
