This is my first and only heroic fantasy character, Levi al-Cid, co-created a few years ago with writer
gabriellavedier. Our plans for an adventure comic came to nothing because my visual research on our character's world was fruitless; I didn't know what anything in 11th century Palestine (clothing, architecture, ships) was supposed to look like, and apparently no one else did, either.
At any rate, this picture inspired a very good poem: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/366667/ Enjoy!

What's always amazed me about this drawing is how much like Jimmy Lee he looks. Oh sure, the tattoos are in the wrong places, he's missing an eye and the mouserat's more of a shorts than a skirt person. Yet the build is about right, considering the foreshortening due to the pose, and most of your drawings only show Jimmy with that little topknot of bangs. What this drawing really shows, as well, is that even back then, your grasp of anatomy, perspective and detail were already seriously impressive.
I'm frankly amazed that there was no exploration of the look of the 11th century out there. There are studies, but they're buried in academia, I think. Someone had to consult on Kingdom of Heaven.I should probably look around the SCA sites. Those harmless historical nuts (Who wear boiler plate on their butts*) know everything. It's how I named Rumh, they had a list of common first and last names for the time period.

Haven't seen it, but based on what I've heard, while the theatrical cut is a pretty mediocre movie, the extended edition / director's cut is a good one.
