This started off as a parody of the Gegege no kitaro NES game port, "Ninja Kid".
I thought the character was silly, dorky, and not really fit to be a ninja. so out of pure amusement I wanted to draw what he'd be like in a cartoon.
As I was drawing him, I thought, "hnng, this is too cute to just erase! >//<"
