So, story time.
I learned how to draw musclefurries because
icewolf. Pretty much everything I learned initially came from staring obsessively at his art when I was like, 15 or so. (i was good and didn't look at the adult work i promise)
It really reached a point though where I mimicked him so closely that people could spot it. Rather easily. A lot of my older pieces referenced his work very heavily.
It just felt like a dick move to copy his artwork. Even moreso after his accident. So I kinda stopped looking at his work so that maybe I would stop at least a little bit. And I guess I did?
I didn't even reference his work while drawing this. I've gotten studying his art down to such an ingrained science that this happened just now after looking at the MG dealie he's doing now. I see all sorts of stuff in this that was lifted almost subconsciously from the five pieces that are there so far.
I really like how it looks though. Like, I normally have such huge issues with delts. But that's the best delt I've drawn in like years. And it just like, happened. I was like, BAM, delt. This really feels like the first pencil drawing that I've been actually proud of in like, five years. And I'm unsure if I'm even allowed to be proud of it.
I guess I'm unsure whether I'm hurting myself by being stubborn and refusing to study others' artwork, or if I'm in the right for doing it my way. Even though it seems that the latter way leaves me largely uninspired and apathetic... Maybe I'm not allowing myself to be inspired?
I dunno. Just random thoughts that occurred to me while scanning this.

I'd suggest look at others work for inspiration, but do it your own way, don't just try to mimic. You can look to see how other artists do something, but looking at photographs might help even more, getting straight to the "source material" as it were. If you keep doing your own style it'll eventually evolve on its own as you figure out better ways to do things, whether it's faster or just looks better to you.
