Let me make something absolutely and unquestionably clear: I hate Yu-Gi-Oh GX. It's not only my most hated Yu-Gi-Oh series, it's also my most hated series PERIOD! So then why am I drawing Elemental Hero Neos, an iconic monster of the main character, who's one of the biggest reasons for me hating the show? WEEEEEEEEEEELLLL I've been playing some Yu-Gi-Oh Tag Force games, I wanted to settle on the 5Ds ones, but it was confirmed that Yu-Gi-Oh Tag Force 6 would not get localized in the west, because apparently the PSP is dead here! Yeah weird, how Japan gets these things earlier than us and yet keeps them around longer too?! And there's games for the PSP still coming out, this sucks! WHATEVER! I was hungry for more Yu-Gi-Oh, so I did go and play some of the GX games and in one of them, my favorite character (or make that only character with higher than average intelligence)(Bastion Misawa) was actually put into the shoes of Jaden, the main character. He had his deck and fought a lot of the same enemies Jaden did. I do say he did some stupid things because of this, but I couldn't help, but feel that he still was somewhat true to his real self and felt "out of place", which to me has given him much more depth than the main character ever had. So whatever, he used Elemental Hero Neoes in combat and I figured: Ok he's actually kind of cool, perhaps I should make a picture of him someday.
Now was this long "prologue" here really necessary? I think it was! I hate Yu-Gi-Oh GX, I consider it one of the most awful things I ever saw and I dream of one day making a multi-part review to take a look at it and rip it to shreds! And with my giant hate, I couldn't just draw something related to it and claim that "it was just for fun"! But now onto the proper description:
================================================
As I've mentioned before, I sadly most often work on either my comic (which is of very low quality, because as I keep saying: IT TOOK ME SO MANY YEARS TO GET THIS FAR. HOW FAR DO YOU THINK I'D BE IF I MADE EACH PAGE LOOK AMAZING?!?!?!), which kind of gets me in a bad mood sometimes, so then I feel compelled to draw something amazing to counter-balance it, which most often involves just recreating some different artwork. Of course there's still commissions where I do try my best and still have it be 100% my original work, but... ya know, that's a whole different bag, I need someone commissioning me to begin with.
So I took this picture, worked on it for weeks, kept adding new things, came up with gimmicks and tricks to make it look better and better, and so with the ultimate result, am I happy?
........... naaaah, I even feel a bit ashamed that after so much time and work was put into this, it looks only this good. Ah well, but I should move on and continue I suppose.
Also take note, when picking a pose for Neos, I did look through all the cards that did feature Neos on them and settled on the Assault Armor one, it looked the nicest and also there he was drawn in burning colors, so I like to think that this somewhat justifies me making this image.
Originally drawn by .... I don't know, Yu-Gi-Oh doesn't seem to give artists credits, it just lists Kazuki Takahashi and I kinda doubt the big main creator drew every monster himself.

I respect that you hate GX But I absolutely loved that season personally. though honestly the english version made me a tad nauseous by how bad the voice acting was and how they changed the story. Fortunately for me this was around the time I got into Japanese versions of anime. The japanese version of that season was actually really good. most of my favorite cards in the actually card game come from that season, Crystal beast's, & Neo spacian's, mainly.
I have to right in the open say that your words mean a lot to me. I said something nasty about a show you like, you've shown me respect, thus I feel obligated to return the respect. I do enjoy this! I wish I would see this kind of opinion exchange more often! Heck, these comments make me feel more forgiving towards something than comments that insult me! This isn't to say I get a lot of nasty comments on FA...... but I do on YouTube, heh, just saying! Eitherway, this to me unquestionably means that you are awesome!!! (Well, that and your avatar... (Hawkmon => AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
I'm not sure all that much about the censorship deal. Sure, every show got ruined by 4kids, but I would argue that when I look at the Yu-Gi-Oh wiki, often times, when listing the edits in the original yugioh and the 5Ds episodes, they would fill up quite a solid part of the page. GX? Not so much. Yes there were more serious episodes which had themes seen as unsuitable for children, but all yugioh shows had that and I'd argue that GX had the least of that. YES, I realize some moments in this series were shocking and graphic (like the way Aster's dad is being devoured by that monster's wings), but on a scale of amount of this happening, I think GX had that least often.
I get the impression the series must have ran through a lot of producer meddling. Now let me explain. Jaden is bland, we barely know a thing about him, he feels to me like some last minute ad-on with no personality, as if some producer insisted that "the kids would like some up-beat character that they can relate to". With that said I think someone else must have been the original concept for the main hero, and that is Syrus. Just... think about it!
The original Yu-Gi-Oh had Yugi and Yami Yugi. One is weak and gentle, while the other is courageous and fierce. Now naturally this had some problems... I mean little Yugi kind of stops being useful at all to the series. Whenever there's action, Yami Yugi takes over. In Season Zero it at least felt like a Hulk story, but in the real main series, it lost that charm and most often we have no reason to care. By the end of the show we just have to buy that little Yugi changed. BUT I DIGRESS, with this I try to say that Yu-Gi-Oh GX might have tried to do something else. Like the story of a poor little boy who enters the academy in order to improve... perhaps to defeat some rival.... like.... his older brother?! Yeah, Sirus and Zane, I see so many similarities!!! And a story of an underdog going up sounds so much more interesting and also I could see elemental heroes much more fit Sirus cause he fits my definition of a comic book nerd far more. BUT, we didn't get that, we instead got a dumb uninteresting golden boy, who is perfect from the start.
Oh man, I wrote so much already.... LOOK, what I'm trying to say, I think the show might have been "okay". I would not like the setting, the concepts for the villains and other elements, but if it would be a story of some other character than Jaden, that is someone not totally obnoxious.... I could be more forgiving to it. A story of growth, how one can improve, believe in dreams and make them come true with hard work.... This was the opposite:
-Jaden is dumb... that's a good thing
-Jaden has no real long-term goals... that again means he's a very good person
-Jaden doesn't want to learn at all or work ... Again, that is a great thing!
-Jaden is choosen to fight Kagemaru ... why? Because he has no reason to duel other than the fun of it, and thus he's the MOST INTERESTING AND DEVELOPED CHARACTER!
-Jaden wishes to learn something new cause he's affraid to loose against Zane... AWFUL! PUNISH HIM! He must learn the error of his ways and become a slacker!!!
Again I'm very sorry, I understand there's good elements to this show like some interesting monsters or characters, but in the core, this series stands for everything I hate. And also take note, I'm a 2 time college drop-out and even I won't stand for what Jaden stands for. I'll work hard for my dreams and won't tell my proffessors to "TAKE IT EASY AND GET THEIR GAME ON!!!!"
Ugh, I don't want to make anyone mad, but I can't help but get angry when talking about this....

Well everyone is entitled to there own opinion. I could not show any disrespect for that. I actually really respect that went to far to explain everything that you disliked about GX. Even though I still like the show , It allows me to see things through your eyes and allows me to better understand why you disliked it. I would say try giving the Japanese (with English sub) version a chance but there are so many episodes. for example one of my favorite episodes was never dubbed its episode 175: Battle Royal! Judai VS Johan VS Fujiwara. (Judai = jaden - Johan = Jesse.) and it was such a good episode. I really showed the bond between Judai and Johan. To be honest all I can really say (if you haven't already) give the Japanese version a chance. I feel like it really does give Jaden a personality. but then again Its been a LONG time since I watched GX so I could be wrong.
sorry I wasn't able to write a very long response like you did I've never really been good at explaining myself anyways.

Eh it's perfectly ok, I have a lot to say about this, but true, a lot of it might be based on my own experience in life. Me working hard while stupid slackers with no visions for future getting pass things easily.
I did watch the last season with subs, cause there was no other way to see it, and a lot of people claimed that it was the best season... and like with claims that the first season is the best, I can't agree myself. My favorite was the second season with Satorius, and especially the moment how Jaden meets Neo space dolphin. The entire string of that moment, from Jaden loosing to Aster, to coming back to the Academy... I love it! Not because it's GOOD, but because it's BAD, REAAAAALLY bad and stupid! But that's the thing: it's stupid, while being HILARIOUS! Also the final battle against Satorius, it really felt like the show tried to say "Yeah, we know Astor should be the hero here, but... ya know... Jaden", which you could call a negative message, but I felt it was openly addressed, so... yeah, thank you for that.
I kind of liked Johan, he was again another person that I would like to have seen as the main hero, but I didn't like how quickly the romance between him and Jaden got going (don't give me that look, to me it was the closest Jaden got to something... AND IT HAPPENED WAY TOO QUICKLY!). I had my problems with that whole duel and then... while it was about to end I wanted to say that it's not that bad of a season, but then the big revelation came that card games came before humanity, which is breaking continuity with the first series of Yu-Gi-Oh and is just so stupid that.... I didn't like it either. Hard for me to tell which season I hate the most, I can only say that I hate season 2 the least.

I want to be honest. If I hate something, I hate it. If I find something about the thing I hate that I find redeemable, I want to address it. I even think one of my favorite reviewers mentioned how much more he notices good things, when they're in shows or comics that he despises.
Yu-Gi-Oh GX will get it's treatment one day, for now I just declare that some monsters in the show don't look bad, and that from start to finish, Bastion is the most likeable character in the series for me......... And so that you know: He's implied to be a pedophile as he's blushing extremely at the sight of one 7 year old girl monster card......... still most likeable!

I didn't quite like Yu-Gi-Oh as a show as a whole really. When I saw Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged that I had gotten a better view of the show, even though that is a parody poking there.
There's always something good in mediocre or something you hate; you can always learn from something. Heck, you can learn why Ultima 9 was literal blasphemous poo by watching Spoony's reviews, and reading about the troubled production. I can't think of a thing off the top where you can't learn anything from it.
A character loving a 7 year old girl Monster card???.....I think that has to do with Japanese culture D: I'm all for characters that have weird quirks, but I dunno about that!

Ultima 9, heh, yeah, saw that. Incredible in more ways than one. And you do have a point. Thinking about it, I do notice how CLOSE GX actually came to being good, but decisions which still stink to me like a room full of investors saying "Look at these charts! All shows nowadays have dumb and flawless main characters! We should have our show have the dumbest and most flawless main character ever!!!"... they turned this into my most despised thing ever. People say that some anime gives the implications that dumb people are much better than smart people.... GX turned the implication into an open statement. There's literally moments in the show that claim how Jaden is good because he's 1 dimensional, has no big motivation nor character and doesn't learn.
As for Bastion, I do realize it's a Japanese thing, and heck, 4kids didn't even edit that one out, but I still like to put that out as a statement. How in a normal show this would be a major thing downgrading a character in my eyes, making me feel uncomfortable, at least mildly, but... sorry, he's the only smart guy in the cast, who works hard to graduate and does his best to play tactically against his enemies, you know.... HOW THE GAME IS SUPPOSED TO BE PLAYED!!!! But nope, the fans of the show hate him just for that and he is cast aside and even leaves the show. My God, it's not even that he's a joyless boring bloke! He's having fun, LEARNING!
"How dare you work for your dreams! You should be a slacker telling teachers to "take it easy"! Even better, if you want to be like card game Jesus Jaden, you should have no ambitions what so ever! Don't even play card games to be the best, play them for fun!"
I honestly even feel like I should be very forgiving to Yu-Gi-Oh ZeXal, because from what I saw, Yuma, the main hero of that series, he's COCKY, he's stupid. A lot of people say that he's like Jaden, but I have to object on terms of framing.
-Yuma is cocky and its played like that. People sigh, think he's stupid and waaaay over his head (which he is)
-Yuma isn't treated like a chosen entity to bring the world into a better age... He's an annoying kid who sadly was choosen to save the world. Really, even Astro, the superior entity who accompanies him, acts a little annoyed that he has to deal with Yuma
-If Yuma wins, then it's usually by luck or figuring something out at the last minute.
So you see, ZeXal feels at times like a lampshading of GX, SOMETIMES, but even so, Yuma is not some ...... ugh I apologize, I again write these insanely long rants about GX. Sorry sorry, I REALLY hate it.

Why thank you ^_^ I appreciate these words. I really should remember them.
Regarding the pose, I really needed time to think about this. Previous monster cards that I did were ones of the actual monster card, but let's take a look at the card "Elemental Hero Neos":
http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/_.....MP-EN-C-UE.png
Quite... generic I think. I know there are only so many "superhero poses" one can think of, but... this is kind of a big character amongst them, and he just stands there, looking down. Might just be my personal opinion, but yeah... so I looked at other cards that feature him:
http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/_.....AS-EN-C-1E.jpg
No....
http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/_.....-EN-ScR-LE.jpg
No!
http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/_.....EN-DRPR-DT.jpg
YES!!!!
And that's how this image got made!

As much as I disliked GX, it did give us popular cards like Cyber Dragon and the HERO monsters. The latter is actually winnable in tourneys. E-HERO Another Neos seems to be more popular than his adult counterpart, though.
Regardless, nice drawing of Assault Armor. I really regret trading away that card, now.
