Stearns, KY. It was a lead that ran off the yard tracks and just ran out into the woods behind the locomtive shop. Not sure of where it went but might have been the spur that ran out to a wye track the railroad used to have to turn engines because they didn't have a turntable.

Could be. The practice was the trains went down the mountain tender first. The line at Stearns is in place as far as Blue Heron mine and the Big South Fork Scenic operated the line for passengers. Trains still back down the mountain as there is no runaround track at Blue Heron.

We have a few of these in Vermont. But many of the old rail beds are now used for activity trails. Some quite long, used by ATVs, mountain bikes, runners and Snowmobiles in the winter times.
