I found another version of the leading lines I was trying, this time facing the other way and up the hill .. NOW if only I had taken one shot in colour, but still I like the desolate feeling that the monochrome effect has

I think you got pretty close to hitting this on the mark! I think you might have tried crouching just a bit more alongside the fence, so that the first post the viewer sees is a bit more dominant... but otherwise the posts and the fence itself draw the eye up to the horizon just fine.
