WALMART CUSTOMER STUDY (For Curious Furries)
Have you ever noticed that the idea of a simple conversation at a Grocery store is slowly decaying to becoming some sort of myth? No? That's alright it's common to think this way. In our today's media, everything gotta be faster and better and more technology ad svings and money and.... not many customers Care aymore about the grocery experience. As Walmart grows, savings grow ad people grow more Spoiled and ruthless. Their EXPECTATIONS GROW because why? We live in America that's why ;) Forget about all those people who make those products with less than a dollar and get paid shit. This IS WALMART! SAVE PEOPLE SAVE!!! That's all that matters now. Don't worry, gonna rant more later if you are interested ;)
This has been a Recent study done for my entertainment and a good idea of how my performance as a Cashier effects a customers behavior towards me.
You will have to click on the image to see that I have recorded 50 people every other day on if they would talk or speak to me depending on my behavior. I wanted to see how people would react or even TALK if I didn't talk and when I did talk in first appearances. People in general do not care if the cashier talks or not, as long as I get the scanning done and all. So after three days of random scanning and marking by behavior....
When I Talk to the customer First, only about 2/5 of the general amount I deal with everyday are the ones that talk back and at least leaves a impression on me that says, "I wouldn't mind seeing them again."
[NOT] - people who say "Good" and carry on with their tossing of groceries. That's a human habit.
When I DON'T TALK to the customer first, only 1/5 of the general amount talk to me back (WITHOUT HUMAN HABIT of doing it) and actually care how I am doing today.
So this states that when I DO talk to the customer, the chance of the customer talking back or at least caring is 2x Greater than without talking. So that's about ~ 20/50 people who care when I DO talk :/
I'm going to have a journal about how I feel about this plus a LONG rant later on.
State your opinion and/or think about how you act in front of a cashier at a Walmart. Walmart doesn't really care about their associates, just the MONEY! and 'Savings' supposedly :3
I HATE WALMART and am busy looking for another job while working there sadly. If you LOVE Walmart and support it, I would like to know. REALLY! I would like to know why >:/

I used to work at Wal-Mart. Dept. Manager of the hardware department. I didn't mind the job so much. Boring mostly. I pretty much just took care of inventory. It wasn't a terrible job.. Just reallllly repetitive. This was actually really interesting. Hope to see more about this study. Or maybe a variable for approximate age of customer maybe?
COOLIO X3 Did you have any experience to where the customers Expected you to know something that MAYBE you didn't know 100%. Like did they see you as someone that should take care of their problems and if NOT then they would act all rude and think that the service at your Walmart was bad? Oh and the age range was from ~14 - ~80. So I was marking all customers that went through about every 25 I would switch my behavior.
Personally i feel walmart would be better off if they just found a way to automate everything....spare the people who work there the anguish. I went to a walmart once and tried to make a quick conversation and ended up being outright ignored. However it wasn't his choice i could see him constantly looking up at a window with the greatest fear on his face....that to me just made me sick. I do find your little survey interesting. Also why not get a job at like a local grocery store where people do actually talk to yah. We have this local place that is always so vocal. no one cares if you talk or not but when you do. well heh the conversations are fun. I tend to get nabbed up into ones about what my choice of beer will be this month.
That's HILARIOUS X3 Like OMG maybe ALOT of people HATE the self-check out machines since it 'messes up or are broken,' whe really the customer has a short temper or breaks it themselves or the stupid mechanics of Walmart update the machines to where the Shopping cards don't work anymore But yeah you have a point I should actually :D I REALLY wouldn't mind that, it's a REPETITVE job but the PEOPLE make the job experience. And BTW, what beer will you be drinking this month?
I work at a grocery store too and they FORCE me to have conversations with EVERY customer. If I get a secret shopper and I don't have some meaningless, pointless conversation with them, then I get in trouble. I'm grateful that I'm at a quieter store now, so I have more time. The previous stores I worked at all were busy, and I often worked the quick lane, so I didn't have the time for every customer to get an in-depth conversation, so I would get in trouble. I love working the self checkout booths. I don't have to speak to anyone unless they're having a problem. I wouldn't say I'm missing out on much. Hundreds of conversations about the weather, groceries, or other inane things really start to chafe after a while.
I like Walmart as a convenient place to go get a bunch of different stuff. I seriously doubt I'd like it as a job. I don't think it's so much it being Walmart though as it is the size of the store. The bigger the store, the more people show up, the longer the lines, the less personal everything feels. People that go to those stores go to get in, get everything they need and get out as soon as possible. I'm sure the same can be said about the corporate side; the bigger the chain, the less they care about the people working for them. Money's all that matters.
Here's hoping you can get a better job soon.

I use Walmart a lot, simply because of the location I live in. Our Walmart is the main go to for most things, unlike the other Walmarts in the city where people just go to browse and shop around for ideas or fun. I have no real quarrel with it hehe, but you are free to like or dislike it master gruine hehe *hugs* I am proud to say I am one of those few people that will talk, but only if the cashier talks first. I don't want to disrupt them while they work or make them uncomfortable. Also, it has to be brief since there are usually other people in line. So it is a simple hi, how are you, good, you, quick topic if they present something or I have something to say, and done. It all has to take place in about 2 minutes lol. There is not much time for conversation in our world when it comes to task oriented things. It is all timed =)
Customer Experience is the key! Customers become frequent shoppers when the retailers provide them with exceptional experiences. This also reduces the Churn Rate for the companies.
Retailers like Walmart should consider Customer Experience and Employee Experience their top most priorities.
