I'm not really the person to ask, but perhaps he should have something in his hand, like the firearm as you noted. His breast pocket stands out, maybe you could tinker with that. Like a chain coming from it to suggest a pocket watch. I really like this where is going, so I don't think you have to stress about it too much.
