No, not a Greek warrior! Hercules is the name given to this engine by the Dartmouth Steam Railway (where this was photo was taken). The engine itself is a 2-8-0T designed by George Jackson Churchward (who was born in the nearby village of Stoke Gabriel) and built by the Great Western Railway at Swindon in 1920 making it the DSR's oldest engine. The year after 'Hercules' was built, Mr. Churchward retired from the role of CME (Cheif Mechanical Engineer) on the GWR and Charles Collett took over. G. J. Churchward's death came in 1933 when he was hit by an express train while examining a loose rail. This is due to slight deafness and bouts of eye trouble. At that point, he was 76 years old.
