From Thurston book 3, this is etude number 5: after Schubert "Impromptu in E-flat"
Odd that this etude is in the key of C (or D for the clarinet) and not E-flat. Also, Thurston avoided a high B and altered the actual theme of the piece to do so. It's not impossible to get the B out, so I changed it back (around 0:20 in the recording).

About the etude project:
I've been challenging myself to practice a different etude every day and prepare it to the best of my ability in one day. This has been very helpful, but I wanted to add an additional element of pressure/nervousness. So I started recording them to post here.
It's not a real performance- I usually AM playing with a metronome, and I usually record these in a couple of takes and put them together later. I'll try to do them in a single take when possible, but usually I'll break them up.

I really enjoy the Thurston book. He did a great job making them musically interesting beyond just shifting a pattern to different keys and getting louder. Well if you ever write out your etudes- even if it's just a couple- I'll include them in the project and give you credit. I think that'd be fun!
Nice. :3
When doing an étude for my TA, we finally figured out something I haven't really ever thought about ever: The center of my mouth and my tongue aren't aligned perfectly.
It's something I don't really notice when I speak, but my tongue never hits the space between my two front teeth. I feel this is probably due to the fact that I had braces through high school. For S, Z, T and D sounds, my tongue will position itself off-center so the sound can come out correctly. I play the horn the same way...and as a result, the sound isn't centered. Once I REALIZED this and started hitting the spot between my two front teeth when tonguing notes (and keeping my tongue in that area when slurring), the sound quality improved quite a bit. Attacks were clearer, too, of course. XD
My TA said "if only you had mentioned the fact sooner," but of course since I don't think about the position of my tongue when speaking...
But now I know, I need to tongue between my two front teeth, not what my tongue feels the center is.
I digress. XD

I really love those moments- you struggle with something for a long time and seem to hit a wall, but then the simplest of explanations corrects the issue almost instantly. Great feeling!
I actually spent years tonguing the wrong way, worked really hard and found ways to work around it, even won a job that way. But then suddenly I heard myself on a recording with the microphone placed too close- and instantly I realized "Oh my god.... I'm just pushing too hard!" It's taking time to correct the habits of 20+ years of playing, but the results are spectacular.
