I'd think in reality, someone would lose their S if a ferret spoke to them. However, if I saw a ferret at a cash register, looking up at me, I'd probably say something like "Hello there!", and maybe mention something about it being cute, and would probably be taken off guard when it spoke, probably blush, and then give my order.
