I'll move this to scraps eventually, but feh.
Otter and my new bunny boy, Egan.
I was going to make a journal about it but I didn't. My baby bunny, my heartfriend, Louka, passed away the week after christmas. She had chronic stomach issues, due to a lot of injuries and then surgery she had received when she was younger. They took hold one night while I was asleep. By the time I woke up, she was too far gone, didn't even make it to the vet. She was only three. I rescued her at one year of age from 3bunnies rabbit rescue. They had found her in the woods with gaping, infected wounds running so deep into her chest they were shocked she survived through it all. Chances are she was an easter bunny who outgrew her place and was 'set free', and then attacked by a dog or fox or something. She somehow managed to get away from her attacker, survive all the surgery, and then many bouts of stasis brought on by her delicate internal situation. She was strong. A real queen of the house, she ruled her domain with an iron paw. I went away once for a week and left her in the care of my boyfriend and his family. When I came back the thumped and ran away from me for about a half an hour, she was so angry that I left her. She was constantly getting into everything she wasn't supposed to, including the garbage - she didn't take 'no' for an answer. She loved to be pet and fawned over. She loved and protected Otter, and bossed her around to no end. She was my beauty, my baby, my love, and I don't expect I'll ever get over losing her.
As absolutely heartbreaking as that was for me, I felt even worse for Otter. She had never been alone in her life, and she's such a neurotic, scardy little thing, and she doesn't like attention from people. Even though I knew I wasn't ready for another baby yet, I knew Otter needed it. She spent the first two days sniffing around neurotically, looking for Louka, I assume, and then she hid in her little bed and wouldn't come out. So we went to the NYC ACC, and Otter picked out a new mate, a big white New Zealand, named Egan. He was about four days from his euthinization date, too, so we saved his life. Poor thing was found outside on a NYC street in the beginning of december, in a tiny cage so small he couldn't turn around, sitting in his own feces and urine.
He turned out to be exactly what both of us needed - he's a real love, he think's he's a puppy and begs to be pet every time I pass his pen. He loves being held and cuddled and will sit with me for hours as I snuggle and hug him. He's also been wonderful for Otter, because he's not afraid of anything, dogs, cats, the vacuum - nothing phases him. Since he's been around Otter has been less nervous of things, doesn't hide as often, and even lets me pet her every once in a while.
So, here, a picture of the two snuggling together. Here's to my new little family, and to Louka, I know you're up there causing all sorts of trouble - there must be a room specifically for you to rip up all the carpets and chew every wire to your hearts content. Run free, my love.
