Chapter 3: Trust
The cockpit of the ship was different from the rest of the ship. It had wooden floorboards, and and walls. One side was a mini bar with a fridge. Rugs and a 72 inch television in front of the sofa and easy chair, with lamps on each side. It resembled a normal living room, but with a control panel near the windows that viewed to space.
Flint was astonished, “Wow! This is nice.”
Kuusco nodded and walked to the fridge, “It gives it a home feeling.”
Flint jumped on the couch, an sighed in the total comfort of it. Kuusco sat down on the easy chair with a drink. Flint sat up and looked around.
“So this is where you pilot this ship?”
Kuusco nodded, “There are two actually. This one and one below. The one below is less homely, but it controls the engines and thrust. The SCRiD are more for that. Here is just the steering.”
Flint leaned back on the couch and stared at the ceiling, “It is really nice.”
He almost dozed off, when a SCRiD walked in. It held a tablet. It hurried to Kuusco and handed the tablet to her. She looked at it and nodded to the little robot. It took the tablet and walked away.
“What was that?” Flint asked.
Kuusco shook her head, “Nothing you should be concerned about.”
Flint sat up and scooted closer to her, “Then why am I here?”
Kuusco calmly took a drink and set it down to reply, “Not to ask so many questions.”
Flint paused. He tried to think of a response that wasn't a question. Instead he just glared at her. She looked up at him, “Well tell me about yourself.”
“Only if you tell me about yourself.” He quickly responded.
She leaned in enthusiastically, “HA! True spirit! Ok I see. Let's play this game.”
With a big smile Kuusco awaited his question.
“Why am I here?” He asked
Kuusco sat back, “ I needed a crew. You are to help me on land with my tasks plus the SCRiD's beeping and clicking is not really conversational. Where are you really from?”
“You picked me up there.”
Kuusco shook her head, “You're lying.”
Flint grew nervous. Kuusco looked at him again, “One more time. Where are you really from?”
Flint lowered his head, “Dalan. It's a town Eight-hundred miles from where you found me.”
Kuusco smirked as Flint readied his question, “How did you know I was lying?”
“I have my ways. Who are your parents? Don't lie.”
Flint felt caught. He inhaled slowly, “Gerrod and Mena Staltner. The founders of Staltner Robotics.”
Kuusco nodded. Flint shook his head, “I don't have any more questions.”
He stood up, but Kuusco lifted her hand to stop him, “I have one more.”
Flint let out a disgruntled sigh. Kuusco's smile dropped and her eyes were of concern, “How did you loose that leg?”
Flint threw his hands in the air, “I am not answering that.”
Then he stormed off out of the control room, leaving Kuusco in the chair. She took another sip of her drink and the same SCRiD came in with another tablet. Kuusco studied this one longer. It was a news paper print with the headline, “STALTNER CUB STILL MISSING”
Kuusco sighed.
Flint sat in his bunk. He was holding back tears as the world of his past danced through his mind. He took off his Trench coat and wandered to Jakar's bunk. Jakar was sitting up and staring at the wall.
“Hey buddy.” Flint said as he walked in.
Jakar didn't move. Flint walked to him and sat next to him, “Homesick?”
Jakar slowly nodded.
“Me too.” Flint replied.
“How many more days?” Jakar's voice was near breaking.
“This is the first day of three. We'll make it to earth then.”
Jakar lifted his mechanical hand and scraped a tally mark on the wall, “Six days till home?”
“Yeah.” Flint felt terrible after saying that. Jakar nodded. He stared at the tally mark, “I don't think I want to go to earth.”
“I'm starting to agree.”
“I don't think she is a cargo captain.”
Flint lowered his head. Jakar leaned in toward him, “I think she's a pirate.”
Flint rolled his eyes, “Yeah......she is.”
He awaited for the snake to flip out, but he didn't. Instead he shrugged, “Well. It's good you knew. I thought you'd never figure it out.”
Flint was surprised, “Wait! You knew?”
“Yeah! Right before we got on.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I thought you'd freak out.”
Flint paused, and then started laughing. Jakar chuckled, “You lied to me, but I understand.”
Flint nodded, “I have been doing that a lot lately. So, this whole time the homesickness was a facade?”
Jakar quickly replied, “Oh! No! That's real. Just trying to get it off my mind.”
After an hour Flint and Jakar got hungry. They went to the mess hall where the SCRiD's started preparing food for them.
They ate their fill and head to sleep. When Flint entered his bunk the dim light came on and on his bed sat Kuusco.
“Oh. Um.....what do you want?” Flint said.
Kuusco smiled, “I just want you to trust me.”
So many replies danced through his head, but he found himself just sitting next to her like the uncle nobody liked.
Kuusco put her arm around his shoulder and laughed, “You're a good kid.”
He scoffed,“I get that a lot.”
She stared back at him and noticed he was trying to hide a smile.
“See! You smile! I might be bad and mean, but you are now my crew. I kinda have to treat you good.”
Flint managed to douse his smile, “Yeah, but you still have that control on me.”
“Insurance. I promise. Once I can trust you, I will take it out.”
“You trust me well enough to freely wander your ship.”
“Because you have nowhere to go with out my knowing.”
Flint paused. Kuusco rubbed his back, “Trust is an unusual thing. It can start anywhere.”
She stood up and proceeded to walk away.
“Sometimes I hate it when they ask.” Said Flint. Kuusco stopped at the door and listened as Flint continued, “It's the same question, but that's all they think about when they see me. I usually tell them a lame story, but I never really tell them the truth.”
Kuusco turned and leaned on the door frame. Flint turned to face her, “It was really not that dramatic. A simple wreck. I was sleeping in the car, and when I woke up it was on the ground with my leg pinned. I went through the back window, but the roof was crushed onto my leg. My mother and father were ok, in fact they came out clean. They said their seats launched them out, but not mine.”
“Poor kid.” Kuusco replied.
Flint shrugged, “Just that simple.”
Kuusco walked over to him and dropped the remote on the bed. Flint was lost in his memories, “My mother stopped talking to my dad. I was nine. Three years before I went to school. Nine years now. Time goes by doesn't it?”
“That it does.” Replied Kuusco. She then turned and walked away, closing his door. Flint rolled on his bed and dozed away.
