Wolfwings' 5-Card Spread
Alternate title:
wolfwings tried to kill me
Wolfwings is looking to redo his very cool info page about his characters and decided to use a 5-card spread of my ATCs for it. I've done 3-card spreads before, but nothing of this magnitude. It was tricky, it was nothing I'd ever done before, but I'm really happy with how it came out. (Those of you unfamiliar with ATCs, they're 2.5x3.5in cards, about the size of baseball cards.)
Each character has a color theme fitting their personality and background, but the funky iconic tree behind them is a unifying form, so even though it remains the same color in every image even if it's a little affected by the seasonal light.
Wolfwings himself is in the bottom center as he is the one who started all of this, his theme is post-apocalyptic which I've always seen as full of browns and dirty yellows as well as some rusty greens.
To his right is Techekamen, who is a funky red panda with a spring theme; I was given a photo of the Great Wall set against trees and mountains that were deep blue and green, so that became his theme.
Above him is Chatterbox, a critter called a Bergsum invented by
synchra. He/it is summer themed with lots of bright golds and happy purples and blues. I considered adding glitter to the claws, but that wouldn't scan well and since this is kind of for a display purpose I decided to leave it out. I'm the least happy with that card, but I still think it's a cute little critter. and there's going to be a plush made of it!
To the left of that is Lumikelluke, the glowing husky. In the costume his eyes, nostrils, and claws glow, so when I colored his card I tried to reflect that with some blue spillover on his skin and a little on the tree. Lumi is fall themed, with its oranges and reds, which made a great contrast to the grays and blues of his fur. Lumi also managed to stretch his butt into not one, but two other cards! Really now, Lumi...
And bottom left we have Split Paw, who is our winter. In the photos I saw of the suit (which was actually done before any ref art was made!) my favorites were the images of him outside at night, so I drew him in a nighttime scene with snow flurries. So I sprinkled some snow on the tree and on his fur as well as gave it some deep blues for shadows. Although his elbow is probably a little warm as he's stuck it into Wolfwings' card.
So there they are. Whew! A lot of work (roughly six hours, which is the time Wolfwings bought) and some tricks, but it was a lot of fun! Thank you for the challenge!
