I suppose, if they are smart and just take a little treasure, walk back to town without provoking me, and claim to the king that the mighty demigigadragonbeast was slain by their hand, it'll work out for them and they get a good ending.

But let's be honest. A even more powerful dragon uprooted the final boss, to become a final final boss. To the typical adventuring party, it's a challenge.
