Well, growing succulents in general became some sort of fashion among middle aged women in Korea, though I don't think the popularity itself is not the main culprit; it is the culture. Koreans simply does not regard plants as property, and finds no problem in stealing plants as long as they are not commercially grown. Hell, thefts happen even in university grounds. There were several incidents where multiple Rhododendron brachycarpum plants which my professor intended to use for a plant hardiness experiment were stolen.... We had put out some faux signs that said those plants were treated with something toxic, which worked for some time, but eventually we had to move them to somewhere hidden and locked up.
