Tremmie's Dress (with background)
One of my pet peeves is the figure presented, seemingly suspended, in a sea of infinite white. Really, folks, if you take the time to do a picture, can't you throw a background on?
Case in point.

This is a lovely and charming pic, but the poor lass seems to be visiting Jeremy Hillary Boob, Phud, in the Sea of Nowhere. So, back in '06, I threw a quick layer of airbrushed lavender (so as to provide a bit of texture to match the original) and, voila! A lovely and charming piece becomes, well, the lily gets gilded, shall we say? ;)

And now it's a lavender sea of nothing.
So what is the difference?
And who are you...or anyone else for that matter to take someone else's picture and edit it to thier personal likings?
Sorry but a solid color is still a sea of nothingness.
Seriously, if the artist wanted to add a background, I'm sure he or she would have.
Did you even have permission to take thier picture, edit it, then upload thier picture to your gallary? It's all well and good that you still gave credit to them for thier orgianal drawing, however it is the principle of the matter.
Basically what you did, was a rather rude slap in the face to the artist.
What you're saying is that the artist didn't even have the mental capacity to add a solid color for a background.
This is what I'm hearing.
"It really annoys me when someone has a blank white background. So....I'll put a blank [insert color here] background! "
Do you see what I mean? You're doing the same thing, just..with a different color.
Ok I'm done stating the obvious now.

Wow talk about a blast from the past.
I will say though, I do applogize for my harsh statement. i sounded far bitchier that I meant to be.
although, I still stand by what I say, Any solid color is still much like White. Only it just so happens to be the taste of the artist. I do agree...White is kinda plain, hell it drives me batty....but that's my personal thing.
The point in the end really? Is as along as the artist is happy with it, then that is all that matters. It's All good. :)

Oh, just a little side note....
While the lavendar is a pretty color...sadly it washes her out. She already has purples and blues for her clothing. Adding another shade of that only makes her fade into the background you were so intent in adding.
The white made her stand out more. ^^

How about a draped fabric backdrop? Just a gradient that lightens up rather abruptly at the floor, and some choice wrinkles made with shadow/highlighted arcs and voila! Stylish :)
But you don't leave the figure sitting in the middle of the page with nothing there, either. I mean, a badge or a magnet doesn't necessarily need a colored background, and the background doesn't necessarily have to be a color. A couple of lines and/or a prop to suggest a setting can be just as effective...
Though seriously, I think I was just too impatient to do anything with this years ago. I think I was really stressed by real life. Drawing furries helped a bit with that, and backgrounds tended to be boring and aggravating, so--at the time--I just didn't do them.
You're absolutely right, though, about your original post. There are so many of my drawings that could have looked so much better if I had just added a background. XP I'll have you know that not having a background bothers me significantly more these days than it did then. :)
