So
Narsassus is talking about movie scripts, and he linked me to this journal: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/4438540/
And I thought about how when I was a kid, up here in the great white north, pretty much every Christmas we would drive 3 hours to see family in a horrible blizzard. I used to imagine that out there in the white where I couldn't quite see, that there was some sort of terrible man/monster that would run up to the car to kill us all. It used to get so bad that I swore I could almost see his legs out there, scuttling around... Were those the headlights of a car on a parallel stretch of road, or were they... eyes?
So I drew something very inspired by that.

Same here, man. ;_;
I don't mind some of the cutesy crap, but they aren't "monsters" to me, at that point. They're more like critters or something. It's a different category of "monster".
When I think of monsters, I think of the worst possible thing I can imagine, and then I think of something worse than that, and then I think of something that could kill that, and I keep going until I basically can't sleep that night.

YOU MAKE ME CRY
But srsly I thought it was pretty cool. Far from the best film I had ever seen, but I liked its concept OBSCURED MISTY CREATURE THINGS OH MY that's always fun. But I didn't see it in theatres or anything, I got it on DVD in the bargain bin huehuehueheuheue

Ooooh did you see the original The Thing? :D
How ya feel about that thing?
I personally enjoy the macabre mutation thing in it, i have a twisted fascination for "infections" like this, that warp and just utterly kasplat their host.
I also like how it usually retains some semblance of likeness to its host, that really ramps up the creepyfactor in my eyes!
but.... It lacks the sheer HUMANITY to make it really tingle that uncanny valley nerve, like this thing you drew does though... It's so obviously human, but still utterly alien and inhuman... i love it ;u;

I haven't seen it, and I should! It's a classic!
I completely agree. When I design monsters like this, I start with a very creepy silhouette in my mind, and I think about a specific movement that I want to capture, and then I ask "How could you re-arrange a human body to create this?"
It's not an original idea by any means, but it almost ALWAYS yields an original looking and memorable character.

YESSSSS REARRANGING BODYPARTS MAKE FOR THE BEST MONSTAHS!
Im a huge fan of a game series called Dead Space, as they have taken SO many design cues from The Thing!
One of the enemy designs i like most/find the most outfreaking, is this baby right here
You shoot them enough, and they FINALLY die, falling forwards onto the ground.... BUT YOU'RE NOT DONE BECAUSE IT BREAKS UP INTO SHIT LIKE THESE BITCHES which crawl around and jump at you, screaming. And if the head latches onto you, it breaks your head off and slips its tentacles into your neck, taking over your body before wandering off...
I am wall of texting, but i really think that game has some cool designs C:
Just a case in point to finish my foreverlong post of fanliness:
KISS ME YOU FOOL
So yeah, all in all... Uncanny valley makes for some great designs!
