i need to stop making monsters D:
but they are cool!
it's a matriarchal community
males are about half the size of females
the tribe consist of one dominate, mating female two second in command females and a harem of 5 - 15 males.
text wall inbound
very rarely are there two mating females, in cases found the females are sisters and beyond the secondary female relationships it is the only non-life threatening situations females have been found in.
the mating female is often the largest and stockiest in the bunch, the dark muzzle a dead give away.
the dark color is a hormonal side effect of whelping. the darker the muzzle the longer the female has lead.
the hormonal marker is also used as a red light when secondary females have whelped. both the female and her pups are met with the fiercest of retaliation.
the matriarch not participate in hunts and much like male lions is left to watch over the pups.
the young are defenseless for the first two months and feed on regurgitated meat.
besides reproduction males serve as the bulk of hunting ventures being smaller and faster than the larger females.
the males coral prey into the jaws of waiting females who have the girth to pin large prey down.
overheating is the number one reason hunts fail, males don't succumb to it as quickly as females do but they lack the bulk to take down larger prey.
the most common method of killing prey is through suffocation, which doesn't take long coupled with the chase but feeding often doesn't wait.
depending on the developmental stage of whelps the matriarch will be close at hand to feast first with her pups.
the matriarchal position is claimed through battle. after female adolescences have been chased out of their mother's territory they quickly establish a hierarchy among themselves. males just as territory have to be won or stolen and neither is easier than the other. matriarch battles are very violent affairs but never last more than five minutes due to the risk of over heating, however they may lead to death depending on how persist the rival. these battles aren't common due to how large and well fed a matriarch is. the case usually is all three of the wandering females attacking the matriarch at the same time while the tribe is out to hunt. the matriarch will protect her whelps with her life and some times that isn't enough. whelps are killed upon the switch of command and old females chased out.
communication takes the form of highly specialized glands on their necks. most sound produced is in infra sound besides the occasional roars that can be heard for miles. the young are much louder; their voices not maturing until a year old. able to produce sound ranging from 1 - 15,000 kHz their hearing stops just beyond that at 15,500 kHz.
...i just made all that up U:
anyway, boring sketches and i still haven't decided on colors or wither or not they have markings but i doubt it
they live on a dark word so dark skin. like short hot days and long nights. i don't know what i'm doing~
oh yea, they are runners ... well the females are bulldozers. big chest for big lungs and heart, whip tail for crazy turns.
