Welp, I'm off to America again, despite what common sense may tell me. This was drawn before my first trip, when I was worried that the steel valve in my heart (and the wires holding my breastbone together) might set off airport metal detectors. So far they haven't, but I'm still taking along a note from my doctor, just in case.
I'll be off the Net until I hit Tucson in a week or so. This'll have to last you till then. Take care!

That one beats the guy whose car key folded into the car remote so when he put it on the plate and it opened he had to leave his car key at the gate cause it was a "switchblade" type device. Of course, he was on his way home so when he landed he had no way to drive his car home. True story from Car and Driver.

Jeeze!!! Next time, point out to them that under the Americans With Disabilities Act that they are legally required to make a reasonable accommodation, and can be personally sued as individuals if they fail to do so... The law is a lot like magic; it you recite the appropriate incantation correctly, you can ward off enemies and make all sorts of things happen!
A steel replacement heart valve. Unfortunately, it is a common enough problem that a lot of people are living with replacement valves. Often a pig valve is used but for some people who are just extra special, the replacement has to be an artificial device. Karno has one of the artificial ones made from stainless steel so he ticks. If you ever see him in person, listen for it if the conversation slows down. Great at parties. :)
Oh and the other wires are to make sure his breastbone has the strength to stay in one piece after the surgeons had to split it in twain. Bwhahaahahahaah. Great stuff, medicine.

The pig valves are generally implanted in older people because both they and the people have a relatively short life expectancy. In the US, carbon valves are used in younger people; they are lower in mass (but higher in cost) than stainless steel and hence open and close a bit more promptly, but they click, too.
