The staff does several things for her. Its primary role is as remote controller for the stage sensors and mike pickups. This way she can configure the their stage arrangment for differents songs while staying on stage. Second it functions as a chording keyboard so she send text messages to small corp of bigum technicans and roadies that help set up the stage and monitor the electronics behind the scene. Third she can use the staff to make music itself. The staff has couple emitters that can be turned on and off and they can be used the same way that the emitter bracelets and anklets do to generate notes. Also she can use the staff to strike parts of the stage to activate the pickup mikes in the stage floor to create specific notes. Finally, she uses the staff as visual part of her performances. Since she is a martial artist and staff is preferred weapon she can use it it good effect during the performance. In later models they even included a couple LEDs and she would do a lightsaber-like solo during parts of the concert.
Yeah and the important thing for the band is that they've kept all the patents for these gizmos and have started marketing them for sale to other mice. Now of course they are selling the first generation of equipment and they've moved on to second now, but at least now other mice can get into the music field the same way they have. This has gotten them quite a bit of accolades from the art community. Also on top of that wand she has that inner arm PDA device that can wireless link to other equipment on stage. It has a very short broadcast range, but when your stage is measured in a few feet you don't need to pump out huge amounts of signal.
Actually I watched Jessica do it once in one of my dreams. What you get at first is a general questionaire that you fill out and send in then. Based on your answers the government then sends a more detailed form that is more tailored to your species like say Canid or Felid.
Of this quartet I'd have to say Harmony is my favorite. But I've always been a sucker for the smart girls.
As for the "lightsaber" effect you mention above; I bet Beat could work up pretty awesome rythm/stage fight for a show sometime. (Very "Blue Man Group" if they did it in the dark as well.)
And if that wasn't enough fan boy-ishness, Has Harmony ever gotten into the whole Steampunk genre?
