I decided halfway through the process that it looked distractingly overdetailed in comparison to the relatively cleaner style the rest of the shading had.

Personally I dig the glittery effect on the 2011, though i just love glittery stuff :3 I like the more simplified sparkles too, though

I agree with you above, the mane is a lot less distracting to the rest of the piece. This looks great! Your sense of lighting has vastly improved as well as your anatomy!
