No way! I got my first SLR in December of 1994. It was a used Canon AE-1 Program. I got a lot of use out of it and it was Ideal for the photo class I took (in college) the following summer! ^!^
In 2000, the part that held the flash shoe came a little loose and I dumped $700 - $1000 into a Nikon N-80 (the 35mm equivalent of the D-80). I got less use out of that, because I soon fell into financial hard times and, unfortunately, paying for film and processing made 35mm more like renting the camera than owning it.
In 2009, I had enough money to afford my first digital camera. I spent no more than $300 on a 12.1 Mega Pixel compact camera. I could have spent more, but I wanted to save that money for my first fucon: Furfight 2009. ^!^
