One of my pet portraits, of absent, very much missed, babies. Ivan was treated so often for UTD, that he was surgically altered from male to female to avoid any more crystal blockage. He was a freak of nature, but he was OUR freak of nature!

He passed away in 2008 -- he was 15 years old. He was brought to us when he was only a few days old -- his mother had abandoned him when some kids startled her during a move of her kittens. We bottle-raised him. UTD stands for Urinary Tract Disease. A lot of neutered males are prone to it. Crystals form in the urinary tract, blocking the urethra and the cat can't pee. The vet had to roto-router him out so much they ended up giving him a sex change operation.
