The only relic my family owns from the Ancien Régime. This is a rapier, the common sword from the 16th to the early 18th century; later on, the development veered toward the smaller, lighter tuck which resulted into the modern sportial Épée. You can easily see that the rapier still bears a strong resemblance to the late medieval sword.
The rapier is rather simple and rugged; definately made for the actual use, not for show. The hand guard is made of some bronce-copper alloy which makes it impossible for every expert I asked to repair the clearly bent crossguard. Heaven knows how or when that did happen. I could not identify the armorer's sign yet, and to be honest I hardly tried.
Another unnecessary item which lays around at my place.

Definitely an interesting weapon. Before opening the image larger I had considered it possibly being a smallsword, the more common general's weapon (usually just for show, of course), but I was actually glad it is a rapier! I tend to get the two mixed up as far as aesthetics go - I think it's blade length?
Anyway! Definitely an interesting piece you've got. Seeing the rapier's history as a commoner's weapon, something to be used in a duel of honor or to defend oneself or one's home, I think it might be safe to say you've got not only a fancy piece of family heritage, but one that might possibly have blood on it...
As morbid as that sounds, can actually add the the cool factor!
I really liked this. ^_^
