Old vs. New Scanner
Old scanner on the left, new scanner on the right.
At first glance you might not spot much difference, but the differences are actually pretty striking. For example I had to majorly tweak the image on the left to darken it, while the one on the right scanned in like that on the first pass. It also picked up the reds better on Tahn's skin and wings, and picked up the softer subtle blues used to shade Mae's face. Tahn's eyes are still a tad faded, but maybe it was just a really faint yellow I used,
Overall, much happier already.
(As a note, Old scanner was a Brother MFC-6490CW. New Scanner is an Epson WorkForce WF-7510. And I'm sure you can suggest much better scanners blah blah blah, but I like having an A3 sized scanner and my options are limited.)

I've always been unimpressed with Brother hardware, it's always struck me as being relatively low-end consumer-grade; good for occasional light use, but not what you want if you're looking to do anything "serious" with it. Epson's are good scanners, my previous one was an Epson, which was only replaced because like you, I went with an A3-sized scanner.
I got a really good deal on a Mustek A3-sized scanner on Amazon (even shipped for free, which was nice). So far it's worked really well, the only complaint I would have with it thus far has been that it's a little slow. It is *so* nice having a scanner big enough that the sketchbooks and large-sized bristol actually lay flat.
Ah yes, I used to have one of those, but the scanner bar kept locking up on me. After the second Mustek started doing it to I switched to the Brother, as it was my only other affordable option at the time. You can imagine my squee level when I found out Epson had a model out.
Now scanner picks up colors and subtle colors better, such as the light glare in the background.
That's on thing about traditional art I guess, scanners often not doing the piece much justice, although I guess with printing digital the same could happen with a bad printer.

Looking at this just remind me why I was starting to consider getting a scanner of my own ^^;
Though one thing I could say is sometimes to not rely solely on the scanner, and not to be afraid of doing some color adjustment on a picture post-scanning. I know I've often enjoyed varied versions of photoshop a ton-load for this reason(Two words: "Adjustment layers". So instead of adjusting contrasts and such directly on the picture and have to keep backup save if you need to revert.... you can create a simple layer which come with a set of contrast layers of it's own... the whole which you can delete if uneeded or undesired after tweaking attempts).
