My parents wanted to get my into preschool early (age 3). The only real way to do this was to get me to fail a speech test.

Unfortunately, my parents came from a northern city, spoke correctly around me, and as a result I was already a professional linguist by this age. When the speech teacher (Who ironically had a heavy Southern 'twang') asked me to say certain words, I did so relatively easily, but when she wanted me to say the word 'again', having never heard it pronounced with such a heavy accent, I repeated the word; accent and all.

To this day my parents claim it was one of the funniest encounters they had with the board of education, though I cannot imagine many funny stories come from boards of education.

By the way, I did get into preschool early, but only because my parents were poor (Dad recently became unemployed).
