Religion to the Dwarves is more of a culture thing. Although Dwarves usually acknowledge their ancestral spirits, their gods, or whatever divine they worship, devotion to these gods is largely a priest thing to them.
The dwarves of EbonyHelm are different. Isolated from most of the dwarvern clans and often looked down upon as having a large population of magic users and ebony dwarves(Basically, dark/black skinned dwarves).
Originally a dwarvern stronghold named IronHelm, which also yielded much Ebony ore, a dark cult that worships Night took over the hold and basically turned it into a theocratic monarchy where women can stand on equal terms with their male counterparts. Not only that, they are often act as a safe haven for other chaos worshipers, from their and other kingdoms.
This has earned it much scorn from the other clans, who can't really do much about it, as the newly named EbonyHelm, along with its tactical defensive position, also has powerful magics at their side, using the aid of Snow Sprites and Glutton demons. Night adores the Dwarven race, who usually shunned her magic bearing ways and her dark, cold like nature, and would send her dark servants to protect it at all costs.
The city state also is far more devoted to their dark bat goddess and even continued to maintain a powerful portal to keep in contact with their patron. The warrior caste has shrunk in size, with rune mages being mostly either dwindled or having turned to the darker magics of summoners and battle mages.
Not only that, instead of using iron and steel for their blades, axes, hammers, and armors, they use ebony metal, often called Black metal, often seen as a metal touched by the black goddess Night herself in dwarvern culture.
But the one thing that has troubled many dwarves is the fact that while their population had dwindled and barely rose, the EbonyHelm dwarves population is growing far ahead of theirs, leading to a question in both theirs and their allies minds. How long will one stronghold be enough for this cult?
===========================
I LOVE dwarves. I really don't care much for elves, hobbits and what not, but the dwarves culture always stuck out to me. A glorious mix of a industrious race with heavy influences of Norse and Scandinavian influence. Plus they tend to be some pretty wicked warriors.
Night to me feels like a suitable goddess for a dwarvern kingdom. Being a mostly underground race and what not, it seems only fitting that they would worship gods that associates with creatures of the earth, like bats who hang around in caves and caverns.
