The "Paw-Tec" shelter is one of the third-party projects built by the Vault-Tec Corporation long before the Great War, located in Northern Alabama.

The purpose of this project was experiments on the genetic modification of humans by embedding the genomes of various animals (in contrast to Shelter 87, where the FEV — Forced Evolutionary Virus was used). It is the largest repository of genetic information in the post-nuclear USA, has a huge archive with encyclopedic data, modern medical and laboratory complexes, as well as powerful technical equipment.

This shelter is divided into two parts - the residential sector for living and reproduction of experimental subjects, where special attention was paid to training and physical culture; the scientific sector, which is much larger than the residential one. It housed a scientific group with their families, the above-mentioned laboratories, repositories and archives, as well as a zoo with a huge number of animal species.

For the selection of test subjects, the shelter system announced the mandatory gathering of a group of residents from the residential sector, ostensibly for another expedition to the surface in order to populate post-apocalyptic territories. Each time, a small celebration was held in honor of the waning, and fake pictures of previous groups against the background of post-war farms and cities were broadcast on slides inside the residential sector. The elevator, supposedly leading to the surface, delivered the victims of future experiments directly to the scientific sector...

The first experiments set themselves the task of partial replacement of tissues and organs of the subjects, in order to improve the physical and mental abilities of a person. Transplantation was not expected to bring any significant positive results, although experiments continued to be conducted for 25 years. And then the geneticists came into play. Feline vision, canine sense of smell, echolocation of bats and sharp hearing of a fan are only a small part of what was able to be built into the bodies of the subjects with varying success over the next 30 years. As a rule, the results of experiments looked ugly, their level of intelligence dropped significantly, problems with the work of other organs began.

In May 2132, the Supreme Council of Scientists adopted a new concept: to use animal embryos and embed the human genome in them (i.e., the reverse method). It became impractical to maintain the residential sector, so the shelter system declared a "Great Day of Resettlement" - June 1, 2132, as a result of which more than one and a half thousand residents became experimental subjects in the laboratories of the scientific wing of the Paw-Tec Shelter.

12 years later, in 2144, the laboratory staff manages to create an anthropomorphic creature based on a male wolverine (Gulo gulo luscus). Object 717-81 became the first viable individual artificially created by the hands of scientists of the shelter. Despite the excellent physical indicators, the creature had absolutely no self-identification, the level of intelligence was practically zero. Living by instincts, 717-81 absolutely did not want to develop - the following objects, which were created on the basis of other animals, had a similar problem.

In 2146, there was a successful attempt to transplant a Biological-Management Controller (BMC-2.0) into the brain of object 717-81. The shelter supercomputer Zax (4th version) successfully contacted with implanted module of the object, taking control of all the functions of its body. At the limit of the creature's physical capabilities, a personality was created, whose name was given in honor of the Refuge's artificial intelligence - Zax. Anthropomorph Zax successfully passed all intellectual tests and actively contacted the scientific staff.

The year 2148 was the "golden year" in the history of this shelter: new species of creatures were successfully implanted by controllers and showed amazing results in tests. The Programmers' department worked on the autonomous firmware of the implanted modules in order to unload the Shelter's supercomputer and allow the objects to independently form an artificial personality.

On January 12, 2149, as a result of a critical error in the security protocols, the supercomputer unlocked all the doors of the scientific complex, including the observation chambers of the experimental subjects. The object controllers were ordered to destroy the entire human population of the scientific sector. It is not known whether it was a computer decision or an outside influence. Within a few hours, the scientific staff was brutally torn apart by a thousand of their creatures, after which the system stopped communicating with all objects except 717-81. The supercomputer announced the beginning of a new era of super-humanity.

Most of the former subjects left the Paw-Tec Shelter. Some of them got lost in a bloodthirsty pack, terrorizing the remaining population of the state, someone preferred the life of a loner and such wanderers often died in the dangers of the New World. Some managed to establish contacts with the residents of the district - anthropomorphs managed to become excellent hunters and traders. A small group remained in the shelter, helping Zax to keep him in working order. Sometimes the departed wanderers returned to share news with the Overseer or ask for advice.
