The YCH Rant (G)
On its own, a YCH comm is fine, it's a preplanned pose/scene you pay to put your character in. The problem is how they're used in practice. You'd think the fact that a YCH skips posing, prep time and sketching ideas, and gets straight to line work would make it cheaper than a commission, but most of the time they end up being more expensive for some reason?
Part of this is how they are priced. Some are multi slots that you just claim at a flat price, and these tend to be more reasonable, but the other method is bidding. Starting bids tend to be below comm prices, but auto-buys tend to have massively overinflated prices, and what happens when you introduce fomo into the equation? Well the auto-buy becomes the price because other people want to AB before you do.
So in practice, you pay more for less, and on the commissioners side this sucks.
Same problems apply to adopts, really.
My plead to artists is to just flat price the damn things according to what you think is reasonable instead of FOMO driven fake bidding system that is an illusion. There is no bidding, just the AB. Or at the very least make the AB price more reasonable. When I see an artist of similar quality to another charging 5x the price through YCHs you can guess which one I'm going to prefer.
