Switching Trucks to Electricity (G)
Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven recently signed an agreement to completely ban internal combustion engines by 2035, joining countries also planning to phase out internal combustion engines and under the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Environmental protection is the main goal of this agreement, and progress, new jobs, and the development of the automotive industry are more of a pleasant bonus. Of course, many see the issue as politically motivated: a reduction in oil consumption will inevitably lead to a change in the geopolitical situation in the world; nevertheless, even oil and gas-rich Norway is planning a complete ban on the sale of ICE vehicles by 2025. For a minute, this is just 6 years, but the prospect is bright - at the end of 2018, 24% of the total number of electric cars were already registered in the country.
By 2030, sales of vehicles with internal combustion engines will be stopped by three more countries - Germany, Denmark and - don't be surprised - India. It is not clear, however, how long it will take this decision to oust millions of tuk-tuk, painted trucks and buses from the middle of the last century from the streets, but a step towards a cleaner environment has already been taken. France, England and China are talking about more realistic time frames - 2040 and 2050. More precisely, Paris will ban the use of diesel cars immediately after the Olympic Games in 2024, and by 2040 - and gasoline.
A separate story with the repair of trucks with electric motors. Even in the United States, there are not many services that can repair an electric engine, and most truck repair services, such as https://tacomatruck.repair, still specialize in repairing internal combustion engines. However, with the advent of more and more trucks with electric motors, there will be more and more services that repair electric motors.
If Russia follows the path of European countries in the issue of refusing to sell cars with internal combustion engines, the experience of Western colleagues will greatly simplify matters, moreover, Sweden and Norway have a similar climate, and it is not the best.
Reducing the cost of electricity due to the development of alternative sources of production can make electric vehicles not only safe, but also inexpensive to maintain. In addition, fewer moving elements - higher reliability, silence during operation allows utilities and delivery services to work at night without disturbing residents - what is not a reason to think about abandoning the internal combustion engine? However, not all so simple. There are places on earth with harsh climatic conditions where electric transport is simply useless. This is a big problem for the abandonment of the production and operation of diesel and gasoline vehicles.
Diesel will reign supreme until a battery capable of holding a charge in conditions of strongly negative temperatures comes on the market. There will be Euro-10, Euro-19 and beyond, in an attempt to minimize the damage to the environment, or there will be a transition to natural gas - the prerequisites for this already exist, but electricity has not yet come into its own in these cold territories. Volvo presented LNG technology in 2017 - a liquefied natural gas engine that does not emit harmful substances into the atmosphere during combustion. The test drive did not reveal any fundamental difference from diesel engines, but there are still very few points where you can refuel with LNG, and they are mainly located in Europe.
