Scanner dilemma - help! (G)

My new scanner is giving me beef. It scans everything so bright by default.
Sure, you can adjust settings. But they don't stick, and the modes you can use them in are quirky and often cause software crashes.
So, uhm ... help?
HP Laserjet 2604dw, Linux Mint 22.2.
Connected via LAN (where user settings are not applicable) and USB (which causes software crashes)
Scanning software is SimpleScan, NAPS, XSane or the offical HP HPLIB toolbox.
