in 2018, when i was in the 7th grade. i had reached pilotredsun's youtube channel, i cant entirely remember how i uncovered it but its statistically because of his "garfielf" video (and probably because of a particular 1.9 GDPS level). however, i do recall first clicking on his channel to browse his other animations, seeing that drawn desert background.
among his creations was his "Achievement" album release. unknowingly, viewing this one youtube video would change me. prior to this, i had a very casual interest in music but nothing that really caught my attention besides perhaps some metal bands such as system of a down. i wasnt really a music person as i found it monotonous to sit through 45 minute long albums of music that, in my young mind, had all sounded similar or un-profound in nature besides maybe that aforementioned band. for electronic music, i was primarily accustomed to EDM music, which i felt had the biggest problem of predictability and normalcy. i had no knowledge of more listening-based derivative genres such as IDM. this album would reverse everything i essentially knew about electronic music up to that point.
initializing with lush sounding synthesizers and distorted drum samples, i was immediately drawn to it. hearing sampled drum kits and experiment-y percussion sounds which ditched the standard engineered clean kick, snare, and hat was overwhelmingly refreshing and was amazed how unique it set a tone. with this sort of style, every track sounded so exhilarating and moving, even if the vibe and tempo didnt necessarily reflect it. later in the album, i heard a bit more of pilotredsun's faster-paced side with "warsaw". again, i was not used to hearing seemingly elaborate percussion, even if in comparison to most of his older tracks, it is practically his EDM equivalent.
achievement is the first album where i had "felt" the music emotionally when i had previously never understood when people described it.
later on, i would discover pilotredsun's older alias: "bittertooth" on this website via someone posting a wayback machine link as at the time, the bittertooth account was deactivated as well as his abandoned luigifletcher soundcloud page. discovering these again felt as if rediscovering pilotredsun and are still some of my favorite tracks of music i have ever heard. bittertooth took the idea of complex tracks of percussion and really took it as far as i can imagine. some of the really deep and dark ambient tracks mixed with the astonishingly fast and varied percussion is a style i still wish more artists did in genres like breakcore. amens are great but there are thousands of other prime samples!!
the tracks you hear on my page are my own interpretation of this style and pilotredsun was what got me into producing music in fl studio which i have now done for thousands of hours. although im currently a little uninspired in this hobby as of lately (and focusing on other things like college and upcoming university), listening back to these tracks sits me down to reflect why and how i got into creating my discography in the first place.
