Forbidden Treasures by Rye the Cerulean Wolf
It was impossible to find, everyone said, a complete waste of time. Though Rye felt different, somehow he sensed something was down there as he inspected an opening in the floor of an ancient temple in the middle of a ruined city. He, like so many others before him, had searched every room and every possible secret entrance in all the buildings surrounding the colossal temple in the middle of the city. It had taken him countless days, weeks possibly, to thoroughly search every building leading up to the gigantic structure in the middle; and just as he was going to call it quits for the day and return to his camp he saw an adequate size cracked opening in the floor of the main worship chamber. True enough, as Rye peered over the edge of the cracked floor and into the pitched darkness below, the young vulpine explorer felt a barely noticeable breeze of wind coming from inside the deep hole in the floor.
Rye sat back and opened his traveler’s pack, searching through it for a disposable glow rod. Finding one at the bottom of his pack the fox cracked it once and the rod was suddenly illuminated by its activated contents, illuminating himself and ten-foot radiance all around him. Rye was sitting behind a large preacher’s podium with the opening in the floor nearly a foot in front of him. Turning back to the hole in the floor, Rye peered over the edge of the stone floor and lowered the glow rod into the darkness below. Almost to his expectancy, Rye sighed as the glow rod’s illumination didn’t show a single thing with its radiance. Deciding to go ahead and try it anyways, the young teen fox relaxed his paw and let go of the glow rod and watched as it fell into the darkness, lighting the entire way as it suddenly hit what seemed to be a solid surface beneath it. It rolled once and came to a stop, illumination a small patch of the surface it landed on. From his height the illuminated clearing was not very clear, the young vulpine knew if he was to see what was down there...he had to climb down there.
Getting to his feet Rye looked around with the already lighted torch he had set on the preacher’s podium and walked around the raised stage of the main chamber. There were three stone pillar columns around the raised stage area and the podium; Rye went to each one, inspecting all of them for the greatest stability and durability for his descent. Out of the three, the one closest to the podium seemed to pass the test. Rye set his pack back down and rummaged through it, collecting the thirty-five foot length rappelling rope and the grappling hooks and clips. Spending a couple minutes carefully inspecting and assembling his rappelling gear, the young fox explorer gulped once in nervousness as he looked down at the dark hole once again.
Hope nothing bad is down there, the young fox gulped as he lowered himself down through the cracked entrance in the floor, his body wrapped securely with the rappel gear. Going slowly at first, the young fox’s fear quickly got the best of him, every noise or imagined sound causing him to stop and look around for a brief moment before continuing to rappel down. About ten minutes seemed to have passed as the young explorer reached the bottom, landing next to his dropped glow rod. Activating a new one, Rye held the rod high as he looked around him in a wide circle, seeing stone statues and strange markings upon the stone walls around him. From what he had to guess, the young vulpine explorer had rappelled down into a worship chamber of some sort after noticing several faded wall paintings of some sort of ritual performance. Noticing the faded mural to his right with the ritual performance drawn into the wall the little fox drew closer to it, holding up his glow rod high over his head, greatly illuminating more of the massive wall painting. Looking up at the massive wall drawing Rye could make out what seemed to be a group of furs such as him, but dressed in very different clothing, almost matching clothing to the furs next to them as they kneeled at the shore of a lake or water pool in the center of the painting. As Rye moved his glow rod further to the right, he saw more of the painting including the water pool the kneeled young people were standing by, but in the water, he saw several of the worshiping furs lifted high into the air by what looked like ropes of some sort. The lifted worshipers were wrapped and bound, suspended high into the air for the kneeling worshipers to witness. As Rye moved further down the massive wall, the rest of the wall painting was too faded to make out anymore, causing the curious young fox to heave a disappointed sigh and lower his glow rod from over his head. Although just before the young fox was about to turn back to his rappelling rope, his ears heard a soft “sloshing” sound behind him in the darkness beyond his glow rod’s reach.
His curiosity getting the best of him, Rye turned away from his rappel gear laid next to the rope leading back up to the floor above and ventured forward into the darkness with his glow rod held up high again, illuminating a ten-foot radiance all around himself. The chamber he must have been in was obviously massive, for towards his right, opposite the wall with the painting, he couldn’t see any indication of a wall where it should be.
